OPI Limited Edition MLB Collection Swatches & Review

by Lisa Heath

Disclaimer

OPI is releasing 7 new limited edition nail lacquers this month, inspired by Major League Baseball (MLB).  This is the first ever professional sports league licensing agreement for OPI!

While the shades in this collection aren’t overly exciting, I can see the reason for that.  MLB colors are fairly straight forward as far as blues, reds, oranges.  No neon pinks or fuchsia’s  really to be seen.  So taking that into account, the overall execution of this collection is pretty much spot on for an MLB collection.

Now to be 100% honest, I’m not a sports fan (sorry!) but I can watch it and seem semi competent while doing so.  Years ago it was a joke when we did baseball pools at work because I didn’t know what teams were better, I would pick the teams with the “prettier” uniforms.

I won over $1,800 that year, which was more than everyone else, including those who actually made their picks based on stats and favorite teams.  Go me.

Ok back to the collection, let’s move onto pictures!

OPI Love Athletes Cleats

Love Athletes In Cleats

OPI Love Athletes Cleats is a classic red creme with pale silvery pink shimmer throughout.  I used 2 thin coats for these photos

OPI Right Off The Bat

Right Off The Bat

OPI Right Off The Bat is a frosty navy blue creme.  I used 2 coats for these photos.

OPI Short – STOP!

Short Stop

OPI Short – STOP! is a rich orange leaning red creme.  I used 2 coats for these photos.  This is a thinner formula, so no need to load up the brush with polish or it may pool in your cuticles.  I found the formula easy to work with, but it can definitely be runny if you use too much while applying.

OPI Orange You Going To The Game?

Orange You Going To The Game

OPI Orange You Going To The Game? is a vibrant frosty orange creme.  Brush strokes are fairly visible because of the frosty finish.  I used 3 thin coats for these photos.

OPI 7th Inning Strrretch

7th Inning Strrretch

OPI 7th Inning Strrretch is a frosty steel blue creme.  I used 2 thin coats for these photos.  Very slight brush strokes are visible and I found that thin coats made the strokes less visible.

OPI Umpires Come Out At Night

Umpires Come Out At Night

OPI Umpires Come Out At Night is a deep midnight blue creme.  I was expecting smurf nails when I removed this, but it didn’t happen.  Yay for blues that don’t stain!  I used 2 thin coats for this shade, but it is a thinner formula like OPI Short – STOP! so you don’t need to load up your brush for application, otherwise you may experience cuticle pooling.

OPI Girls Love Diamonds

Girls Love Diamonds

OPI Girls Love Diamonds is a shimmery pure white.  I used 2 coats for these photos.  This can also be used over other colors in the collection if you just apply 1 thin coat as a topper to give any of them a shimmery white cast.

Overview

As I said earlier, the colors aren’t incredible unique in this collection, but considering the MLB inspiration, they are spot on.  I didn’t experience any major application issues with the formulas other than frosts showing some visible strokes.  OPI Short – STOP! and Umpires Come Out At Night are thinner formulas so they should be applied in thin coats to avoid pooling, but they built up easily in opacity without having to do several coats.  Why an MLB partnership?  Howard Smith, Senior Vice President, Licensing, Major League Baseball said “Major League Baseball understands the importance of female fans in the growth and success of our sport, and so we continuously seek new opportunities to diversify our portfolio of licensed offerings to target this extensive fan base.”
