It’s that time of month again, and this month had a lot going on! School started back up and Jacob is officially an 8th grader. He’s off to a good start and seems to have gotten a nice selection of very enthusiastic teachers. This also means he gets home, does a little homework and crashes super early. He also has an end of school year trip for 8th graders in June that I just had to pay for, so I’m currently broke. I paid for it just a short month after paying for his root canal and custom color matched crown, so Top Ramen will be the meal of choice for me this month. Kidding. Nick cooks and he won’t waste his time on Top Ramen, but I secretly love Top Ramen since I never had it as a kid.

At any rate – today we’re going to look at my swatches and review of the Polish Pickup September 2019 shop with a theme of Magic & Alchemy!

So far I have 104 items done for this post, but I know there’s 2-3 more items still on the way to me. Once those get here, I’ll pop them into the review. I know for sure I’m waiting on Emily de Molly and Rogue Lacquer’s wax – but I suffer from momnesia, so it’s entirely possible another is out there. I also have Masked by Maiden’s Crystal Envy that I left at work that I’ll be including.

This month is Magic & Alchemy and it’s a really good one. Lots of various items and polish shades to choose from, and I was pleasantly surprised at the variety and creativity. So we’re gonna jump in and see what the makers have in store this month.

Inspiration: Three magical potions from Harry Potter 

Description: Pocket sized potion necklaces are 3 necklaces that look like tiny potions! Polyjuice Potion, is a frothy green that glows in the dark, Amortentia, is a shimmery pink that shifts from purple to aqua in the sun, and Felix Felicis, is a clear with gold flecks throughout. Each potion is 1.5 inches tall with a 30 inch stainless steel chain with a lobster clasp. You will receive 1 chain and all 3 charms so you can swap them out.

Description: Invocation Of The Spirit is a black crelly base with caramel hex glitters and a variety of color shifting pigments that flash pink, light blue and violet. This was a bit on the thick side, but still applied without too many issues. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Description: A Fool’s Fate is a vibrant blue creme base with scattered holo, blue shimmer, iridescent flakes, and 3 different color varieties of shift ultrachrome chameleon flakes. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Alter Ego Body Care Products | Bath Blast

Inspiration: I wanted to include amber for my IPU product, I strive to make them relevant to each other when I am allowed to offer both. As amber is considered magical I felt people should have their own stone so embedded in the bath blast is a ROUGH CUT NOT POLISHED piece of amber. The pieces are different sizes and weights, this made it difficult to determine how much product there is per blast. I am going to say at least 6 ounces based on how I made each blast-I started with a set amount and looked to see how much was left before I started another.

Description: Bath Blast is a bath bomb that’s a little different. No oils were made in the creation so it’s more skin soothing vs skin moisturizing like a lot tend to be. Because there’s no oils though, it is more fragile. Mine actually shattered and … that’s why there’s only 1 photo of the product. It does arrive in a small white tub though so if it breaks in transit – it’s still all contained. Within each Bath Blast is a rough cut (unpolished) piece of amber! It is unscented

Alter Ego | Magical Amber (Thermal)

Inspiration:” Amber Boosts optimism, facilitates self-expression, attracts friends and helps to find partner in life, brings victory. Amber bead on a red thread repels witches and malicious spirits. It was believed in the old days that there is no such ailment the Amber would not heal. The Amber was taken internally to help with metabolism deficiencies, hearing problems, and stomach ailments. In Poland the Amber tincture is still considered an effective remedy for colds, throat and respiratory problems. The Amber powder is inhaled to bring relief from acute respiratory disease. Amber pieces are given to babies to chew when they have their first teeth appear. How to explain Amber’s healing powers? It turns out that Amber contains up to 8 weight percent of the amber acid, which has vitamin-like properties. By enhancing endocellular metabolism, the amber acid brings about general improvement of body condition, slows down ageing processes, and normalizes cardiac blood circulation. Protects from evil spells and an evil eye. Amber always was considered an anti-demonic amulet. It is also believed that an Amber bead, hidden in baby’s clothes, will counteract any malicious forces.”

Inspiration:  The One and Only Rowena MacLeod from Supernatural! Fabulous, sarcastic, ageless, magical.

Description: Quite Magnificent is a matte topcoat with blue to green aurora shimmer and shifting blue to green to purple iridescent flakes. It dries down matte in about 2- 3 minutes, so no worries on dragging or trying to rush. I used 1 coat over Anchor & Heart Mermaid Tears for these photos.

AURORA 5-Free Nail Lacquer | Once More the Sith Will Rule the Galaxy (Magnetic)

Inspiration: Sith Alchemy from Star Wars

Description: Once More the Sith Will Rule the Galaxy is a deep blue multichrome magnetic polish based on sith alchemy, which was dark side technique used to create dark illusions. I did use an arc magnet for this mani, so the magnetic shimmer was repelled from the center of the nail vs drawn in. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Baroness X | Acetone Additive in Violet Magic

Inspiration: Inspired by my grandma Violet, my cousin and I would joke about how she was clairvoyant (that seems pretty magical!) AND it’s inspired by the use of violets in magic. Violets are bound to Venus and water. You can use it’s leaves to absorb evil spells and ill will.

Description: One of my monthly splurges! Acetone Additive helps cut the harshness of nail polish remover. It has glycerin and jojoba oil in it which protects and moisturizes your nails. I live by this stuff and it’s basically how my nails stay looking decent even with all the swatching I do. For this month, Violet Magic has a wonderful floral scent with a little bit of a woody note. It has notes of ylang ylang, rosewood, jasmine with a powdery touch and finishes off with a tart violet.

Inspiration: The alchemy ingredient from the Elder Scrolls game

Description: An unscented lip balm that’s tinted a dark, smoky amethyst. Perfect for fall and only leaves behind a light hint of color. It is buildable, and I used 3 light layers for my photo wearing it. That’s right – a real photo of me wearing it! My laser hair removal appointment is next week, so I was able to pull it off this month!

Bluebird Lacquer | Voodoo Bath Bomb

Inspiration: Voodoo Dolls

Description: Voodoo Bath Bomb is a large and creepy bath bomb that’s made to look like a voodoo doll. It’s as large as my hand (included a size comparison photo) and it’s scented with a combination of passion fruit, Crazilin cherry and orange blosson, with a light touch of teak wood. It’s a warm, soothing scent. It just arrived 2 days ago, so I haven’t’ had a chance to use it in a bath yet.

Description: An intoxicating blend of a lovespell type and sweet lemon drops. This is a nice, mellow scent that would be good for having company over for a lightly sweet, citrus scent with a very light hint of almost like almond vanilla to cut the tartness.

Description: Cuticula has another duo this month, this time the Limitless Top Coat and Static Base Coat! Limitless Top Coat is a 5 Free scented Quick Dry Top Coat. It works wonderfully with stamping and nail art. Static Base Coat is a sticky bond base coat to help the longevity of a manicure. Both are available in the scent Sorcery which reminds me of a summer fruit salad! ‘Sorcery’ is a fruity blend of blackberries, peaches, watermelon, and green apple.

Inspiration:  “The cover of the book The Wednesday Witch by Ruth Chew. When I was a kid I looooved this story of the witch Hilda, who found her way to Mary Jane’s house after following the scent of Mary Jane’s mother’s perfume, Mischief. And mischief is exactly what ensued, including Hilda, her cat, and her magic vacuum cleaner being shrunk with a pair of magic scissors and taking up residence in Mary Jane’s dollhouse.”

DRK Nails | Easy Magnetic Effect Top Coat

Inspiration:  A magic wand in a brush

Description: Easy Magnetic Effect was created to make it easier to get a magnetic effect from a magnetic polish. Using this will save you time and help to get the result you want. No need for rushing! Just apply the magnetic polish as a regular one and let it dry. Then apply a generous coat of this TC in one nail and use the magnet over it (repeat in the other nails). I painted 3 thin coats of the DRK Nails Rewrite The Stars as regular polish – no magnet used during the 3 thin coats) then I used this top coat, and after each nail I used a magnet. I got nice lines from it and it was a lot less work than usual.

Description: A crisp and clean complex blend with notes of floral, juniper, and berries meets Honeysuckle. If you like BBW’s Secret Waterfall this is the blend for you. There is a shimmery aspect to this, but on the skin it’s VERY subtle.

Inspiration: The aim of Alchemy, to turn any metal into gold. 

Description: Magna Opus is a stamping polish that shifts from copper to gold to green. It can be used as a normal polish as well. It’s slightly softer than my photos show. I used 1 coat on the index and pinkie, then stamped over a black creme for middle and ring.

Jreine | Pixie Magic Kit

Inspiration: Marie Laveau / New Orleans Voodoo

Description: Pixie Magic is a burnishing powder that can be used easily without the use of Gel or a UV light. This kit comes with a 5ml bottle of Jreine’s Super Base (Burnishing Base coat), 0.30 grams by weight of Pixie Magic in VOODOO and an applicator for easier application. This .30 gram pot should give you several manicures.  I used it over a black creme for these photos.

Really easy to use, paint your nails in the desired color, let dry. Add a thin coat of the provided Super Base and let dry about 45 seconds. Then use the provided applicator (or your finger) to lightly run the powder in. Then top coat as normal.

To stamp it on like I did, paint the base color (I did black) then rub the powder onto a stamper head (it WILL make your stamper head cloudy, so I have one specifically for this) then use a stamping polish similar to your base color on your desired image, scrape the plate, press the stamper head with the pigment on it over the image and stamp on the nail. It will transfer the powder to your nail and you can use a fluffy cosmetic brush to wipe away excess. Excess won’t stick to your nail since the polish on your nail already should be dry.

Inspiration: Practical Magic Midnight Margaritas

Description: KBShimmer is back with her incredible sugar scrub! This is a whole body scrub that smells like a lime margarita! It’s a fun summery scent, but also a nice pick me up in the morning (I love citrusy scents in my morning shower) and leaves my skin super soft and smelling amazing.

Inspired by this magical show, Something Wicca This Way Comes is a magnetic polish full of mystery and magic.”

Description:  Something Wicca This Way Comes is a deep duochrome base shifts from shades of blue to purple. When a magnet is used, the magnetic effect pops through shades of peach, pink, lime and gold. You can also find sparks of holo micro glitter and colorful flakes. I used 2 coats without the magnet on index and pinkie, and on middle and ring fingers I used the black S magnet for the X magnetic effect.

K.N.I. Beauty & Bath | Vegan Cuticle, Hand, & Body Scrub Balm

Inspiration: The magic golden flower in the animated movie about Rapunzel, “Tangled.”

Description:  This scrub balm comes in a large .5 oz tube (that is a little over 3x the size of standard balm tubes). The applicator is good for cuticles, but the sugar grain is slightly more coarse than most scrubs, making it perfect for more heavy duty problem areas like knuckles, elbows, knees, and of course feet. Inspiration: Halloween is magical!

Description: These page markers use rectangular paper clips, stainless steel findings, orange and black seed beads, and Halloween charms. Due to the shape of the paperclip, the charms can’t freely slide all around the paperclip, and I generally find these type to be quite secure. There are six markers in this set, and the charms are a spiderweb with spider, a jack o’lantern, a witch’s hat, a bat, a ghost, and a cat. 

These are so freaking adorable! I’m grabbing an extra set for a good friend of mine who loves books as much as I do.

Starlight Polish | Purifying Flames

Inspiration: Fire, and the belief in fire’s ability to purify, usually by the destruction of evil or corrupting elements.

Description:  Purifying Flames is a topper that’s on the strong side. The base color will elevate it, but it’s definitely got good coverage over any base. It has red to gold to green shifting unicorn pee pigment, red, orange, and yellow micro flakes, red to green and bronze to green small multichrome flakes, small gold holographic glitter, and small orange to gold to green iridescent glitter. Whew.

I used 1 coat over a black creme for these photos.

Polish Pickup September 2019 | Magic & Alchemy

This was another incredible month, and thank you again to all the makers who sent in product to be featured. I already have 25 of October’s items in and I’m excited. As you can see from the collage, the assortment of colors has a really nice range – but there is a large focus on blues, purples and reds.

Also just throwing this out there. I love thermals. Love them. But while I was unwrapping them in 107 degree weather, all I could think was “you all have no soul for making thermals in August” on the bright side though – they sat out in 107 degree weather and didn’t burn out. So nice little testing phase there.
