Press Samples of the Polish Pickup
May 2020 | Candy Land

Disclosure: I am a paid employee of Polish Pickup for their Social Media. While this post isn’t sponsored, I am an employee of their shop

Good morning and happy Friday! I’m trying to get through this post today, so here’s hoping there’s minimal distractions. Nick is working next to me and on conference calls, so I had to switch to my quieter keyboard. I generally use a mechanical keyboard and I don’t think his coworkers want to hear CLACK CLACK CLACK as I type this post out. I type fairly fast, so the constant clacking might drive them all nuts. However – with the quieter keyboard, I’m not used to it and the feel of the keys, so here’s hoping I don’t have too many typing errors. Jacob is working on his school work, so only disruptions in the post would be when he needs help.

Today we’re looking at the Polish Pickup May 2020 Candy Land lineup!

Right now I have 111 items for this post, and as far as I know -I have 4 more in transit. Once arrived – I’ll be adding in Leesha’s Lacquer, NeverMind Polish, Wandering Songbird and Vapid Wax. USPS is running a bit slower – and although most of them shipped this past Monday they aren’t here yet. Hopefully tomorrow.

This month brings us a TON of purples, thermals and a good amount of neon to close neon shades. My skintone is all over the place in photos because neons make me look tan, and others I tried to correct color and since I’m not that great at it, my skin tone is either lighter, darker, redder or bluer. It is what it is.

Tax season ended 9 days ago so I’m back to a normal schedule. I actually have today off – which is why this post should be up today instead of tomorrow. I have a ton of PTO (Personal Time Off) banked so if I play my cards right, I can schedule it around Polish Pickup to work on some things more. Not like I can really go anywhere anyway.

The theme this month is Candy Land! Not necessarily the game – but some did use parts of the game as inspiration – this is about candy and sweets!

For all photos shown – I used Vapid Lacquer Commitment Issues Peel Off Base, Sweet & Sour Lacquer Gloss Sauce as top coat (except for the photos showing Esmaltes da Kelly. Cuticula and Vibrant Vinyls), and Night Owl Lacquer Gone Matte Top Coat unless otherwise specified.

Since I leave for work while it’s still semi dark and I get home while it’s still semi dark – I do use artificial lighting for my photos. My current setup uses Glamcor Pro Lights and I use the Elite X model. That is a link for those wanting to look, but it’s not an affiliate link. The brand did send them for me to post on Instagram too though, so it is a press sample (which I posted about 3 months ago)

This is an EXTREMELY photo heavy post. I think during upload it said 699 photos. If there is something specific you are looking for – on desktop hit CTRL + F and type what you are searching for. Otherwise, enjoy the long scroll down the page, and of course the giveaway at the end.

The May Polish Pickup shop will open May 1st and close May 4th.

Let’s get this going. Nick’s making lunch really quick for us and Jacob hasn’t started his math or Spanish work yet – so I should be uninterrupted for a bit.

Each ball is approximately.20 oz (you can see the size in the photo below) and when dropped in water – they release cocoa butter, shea butter and oil to soften your skin. The scent is Lemongrass – so it’s a nice, zingy scent for the water.

These are fragile, so it’s possible some might break in shipping. If they do – you can still use them by just pouring the crumbles into the water as well.

Ingredients: unrefined cocoa butter, unrefined shea butter, castor oil, baking soda citric acid, stearalkronium hectorite, tapioca flour, mica, lemograss essential oil

Price: $5.00 | Cap: 20 US/5 UK

Alter Ego Body Care Products | Lemon Fizz

I apply a small dab on each finger at the cuticle line and then massage in. Works beautifully.

Acetone Antidote by Baroness X | Violet Sweets

Inspiration: Inspired by Choward’s violet flavored mints and gum.

Description: This month’s scent is Violet Sweets, and it smells just like the violet candy by Choward’s. If you haven’t had it before it smells like violet but has a sweet candy note. I’ve actually never had them before – but if you love violet scents – you will adore this one! To my nose, it’s a sweet but powdery violet scent.

Acetone Antidote is an additive for your acetone to protect your skin from the harshness of acetone. It contains glycerin and jojoba oil to help protect and moisturize your nails, skin, and cuticles during polish removal. Plus, no more ashy, dry skin.

Shake the vial and add the full bottle (.5oz) to 6-8oz of acetone. You can add the vial to more or less (down to 4oz of acetone, no less due to IFRA regulations). These are just suggestions for optimal scent and protection from acetone, the ratio can vary due to personal preference.

I use a full vial in 10 oz of Zoya Remove+

Price: $ 4.25 | Cap: None

Bee’s Knees Lacquer | Chewnicorn

Inspiration: Inspired by The Chewnicorn from Viva Pinata

Inspiration: Inspired by the cutest pinata from Viva Pinata, the Newtgat!

Description: Newtgat lip balm is a sheer raspberry colored lip balm with a hint of blue shimmer. I used 3 coats on my lips for the photo below.

I had someone ask why my photos like this are taken in my car – and it’s because I get natural, indirect lighting this way before running into work.

Also I look very tired in this photo because I am.

Price: $5.00 | Cap: None

Beyond the Nail | Lovable Nerds

Inspiration: Inspired by Strawberry and grape nerds candy

Description: Lovable Nerds is a medium purple crelly base filled with white & neon pink hex glitters. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos. I had no issue getting glitters out and did not have to fish for them.

Bluebird Lacquer | Bows, Knees and Toes All Over Body Balm

Inspiration: Inspired by Jelly beans!

Description: Bows, Knees And Toes is an all over body balm to help smooth rough patches. Works well on elbows, knees and feet especially. Description: Zombie Rainbow is a grey crelly base with multi colored metalic micro flakes. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Swatcher bottles of this shade were hand mixed, and some of the grey pigment didn’t blend completely. By Dany Vianna assured me that the purchased batch will be blended with a machine and will not have those pigments. I didn’t have any major issues with the pigment, but thought I would mention it.

Price: $11.50 | Cap: 200 US / 10 UK

By Vanessa Molina | Wild Berry (Trithermal)

Inspiration: Part of the Skittles Collaboration. We drew inspiration from the combo pack of Wilb Berry and Tropical flavors. Each maker part of the collaboration choose a different flavor as inspiration. Be sure to check out the other skittles polishes and ‘paint the rainbow’!

Description: Wild Berry is a tri thermal that shifts from a warm purple (cold) to medium blue (warm) to light blue (hot) with violet shimmer and iridescent flakes that flash pink, purple and blue. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

It was incredibly warm in my computer room when I swatched this, so my bottle actually turned the warm blue shade – but it will most likely be purple in the bottle when you receive it. I also have a couple more photos to show all 3 shades. Keeping my hands cold enough to capture all 3 shifts was difficult due to the room temperature.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: None

Spun Sugar (cotton candy scented)

Spun Sugar is my favorite of the 3, but all of them nail the scent profiles. Absolutely delicious! I would have loved to see a pink starburst scent – it’s one of my favorite candy scents, but I’m definitely not complaining with these ones.

All 3 are in twist tube brush applicator pens.

Duo Smooth and Shine by Esmaltes da Kelly

Inspiration: None

Description: This is similar to the duo EDK released a couple months ago, but this time it’s not a quick dry top coat (which is why one isn’t purple tinged.) Basically this duo helps with glitter polishes. The cloudier bottle is applied on top of the glitter or “thirsty” polish to help fill in an crevices to smooth the mani. It doesn’t apply cloudy, it applies clear. Then you top with the top coat to seal the mani.

I used Esmaltes da Kelly’s Polish Pickup shade this month as an example. First is the completed mani – and then in order from no top coat to just the filler to the top coat in the photos below.

Price: $15.00 | Cap: None

Esmaltes da Kelly | Skittles Original (Thermal)

Inspiration: Inspired by Skittles Original

Description: Skittles Original is a thermal base that goes from red (cold) to clear (warm) and has red, orange, purple and green matte glitters ranging from micro to medium. I used 3 thin coats and the EDK top coat duo for these photos.

This has a lot of glitter and dries with texture. If you don’t have the duo – then 2 coats of top coat should smooth it just fine.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: 300 US / 20 UK

Ethereal Lacquer | Banana

Inspiration: Inspired by Banana runts

Description: Banana (anyone else saying this like the Minions in their head?) is a bright and sunny, banana yellow with a red, copper to green shifting shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Very light brushstrokes can be seen due to the shimmer content.

Fancy Gloss | Speckled Eggs

Inspiration: Inspired by Robin’s egg candy

Description: Speckled Eggs is a light lavender like violet crelly with a mix of blue and red glitters. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Won’t even lie – I’m so used to Fancy Gloss doing thermals, I tried heating my nails up for photos and then realized it was just a glitter crelly.

Price: $10.50 | Cap: 150 US / 15 UK

Ginger Fizz Boutique | Sugar Rush

Inspiration: “Who doesn’t love candy? I still remember going to my uncle’s little, local grocery store every week with some change earned from chores. My sister and I would stand behind that glass counter forever trying to decide which candies we would buy. This was the day of penny candy, so it took a while and we would come home with our bags full. One of our favorites was the beautiful rock candy sticks. To this day I still buy rock candy, not so much to eat, but I love them for parties. I not only love them to decorate with (they come in every color), but I love to put them in drinks like champagne. What’s your favorite thing to do with rock candy?”

Description: These wax shapes are come in a variety of colors and contain a shimmery mica that can be seen when melted. Each bag of wax shapes contain several pieces of wax that resembles rock candy crystals. This wax brittle is scented in a sugary sweet and mouth watering blue raspberry scent.

Everyone in our house (myself, Nick and my 14 year old son) love this scent! It is sugary sweet – but it’s a “happy” scent that flows well throughout the home.

Price: $6.00 | Cap: 75 US / 25 UK

Cuticule Remover Pen and Cuticle Oil Pen Duo | Glisten & Glow

Inspiration: Now and Later Candy

Description: Side note: My step dad used to have a Costco sized tub of these on his counter, and my sisters and I used to sneak them, but they knew when it was just me doing it because I always left the yellow ones.

“Now and Later” is a custom blend of strawberry, fruit punch, apple and grape and both products are scented the same.

Glisten & Glow’s cuticle remover softens and removes excess cuticle as well as eponychium skin and comes in an easy to use twist-up pen style applicator. The cuticle oil is in the same style twist up pen – and I actually keep this duo in my desk drawer at work. It’s very easy to carry.

Directions for Cuticle Remover: Apply generously to the cuticle area and let sit for 60 seconds. Next, gently push back with your favorite tool, I personally love my Germanikure Crystal Cuticle Pusher (that’s an affiliate link) Finally, wash hands and cuticles thoroughly with soap and water.

Follow up with the cuticle oil pen, and your cuticles will be in tip top shape.

I would show a before and after, but I’m actually incredibly anal about my nail care and use remover every Sunday, plus push back every other day – so I didn’t have enough on the nail to show a before/after shot.

Price: $12.00 | Cap: None

Glisten & Glow | Now and Later

Inspiration: As a child I loved Now and Later candies! My parents and I would take road trips to Maine to visit my Mom’s side of the family and I always got 4 little pieces as a special, sweet treat!

Description: Sugar Crush is a dark turquoise (cold) to sheer light turquoise (hot) thermal packed with a rainbow of iridescent flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This shade is a bit greener and darker in person.

Because the transition is on the subtle side, it looks more like a nail gradient. It’s beautifully done and I like the gradient look.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: None

WiTS Lotion by Heather’s Hues | Gummi Bears

Inspiration: Inspired by those cute and squishy gummy candies

Description: Gummi Bears scent is a delicious and fruity blend with top notes orange zest, lemon sorbet, middle notes of pear nectar, raspberry and blueberry and bottom notes of vanilla bean and sugar crystals. My nose actually picks up a bit of banana too – which isn’t in the scent profile.

Ingredients: WITS Lotion creamy body lotion contains avocado oil, sweet almond oil, rice bran oil, babassu oil, jojoba oil, oat extract oil, buckthorn extract, kukui nut oil, chia seed oil, vitamin E, vegetable glycerin, BTMS-50 (emulsifying wax), stearic acid, shea butter, aloe vera, distilled water, and Optiphen (preservative). Hit the Bottle Polishes | Electro Candypop (Stamping Polish)

Inspiration: Inspired by Skullcandy headphones in a bright turquoise – aqua colour.

Description: Electro Candypop is a turquoise creme stamping polish with a soft shimmer. This can be worn as a regular polish (I did) but it has a high probability of staining due to pigmentation, so it’s not advised by the maker. My nails don’t stain super easy, so I took a chance and experienced no staining. It stamps beautifully.

It’s brighter and more green leaning in person.

Soap Frosting by Skyline Soapworks | Cotton Candy Buttercream

Inspiration: Inspired by the bright colors and sweet scents of cotton candy

Description: Nourish and pamper your skin with our Buttercream Soap Frosting! This whipped soap will help keep your skin from drying out and give it the moisture it needs. We whip this soap with shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, and coconut oil to ensure your skin is left with a soft & smooth feel.

This product can be used as a body wash, hand soap, or a shaving cream. Apply a small amount to a washcloth or loofah and lather and rinse as usual.

This smells just like you would think cotton candy buttercream frosting would. It’s sweet, but the vanilla notes kind of cut the sweetness a bit to smooth it out.

It does have a nice lather to it, but it won’t be as much as commercial soaps produce. I’ve used almost my entire jar already and it smells and feels incredible.

Price: $14.95 | Cap: 25 US / 5 UK

Skyline Soapworks | Cotton Candy Artisan Dip Powder (Solar & Glow In The Dark)

Inspiration: Inspired by Fluffy pink and blues of cotton candy

Description: Skyline Soapworks brings another dip powder this month, and this month’s is cute and playful.

Cotton Candy dip powder is a sheer pink base powder loaded with pink and blue dot glitters mixed with bubblegum pink micro flakes and a white UV sensitive glitter that also glow. In the sun, it alters to a deeper purple color and it glows white in the dark.

This is my second attempt at dip powder and I’m getting quick at it. For all steps I used, I went by this Youtube Video, and I do suggest you take a look as she’s very helpful – especially for beginners like me.

This is for the powder only. I do have a 3 piece nail dip liquids set I bought on Amazon before, which is what I used with this powder. For the first time though – it was a lot easier than I thought. No “curing” with a lamp and nothing was overly difficult for me.

The steps are as follows (and you do 1 nail at a time for each “coat”)

Apply base – this smells like nail glue. Immediately after applying the base, dip in the powder, raise finger and “tap” off excess powder. You might have to flick or tweezer off some dots that hang beyond the nail. Then use a fluffy brush to remove additional excess.

Rinse and repeat for 2 more coats.

Apply activator to each nail. File and buff each nail. Apply activator again and wait 5 minutes. Then top coat.

It seems like a lot, but it actually moves quite quickly.

Price: $6.50 | Cap: 50 US / 25 UK

thanks for a brilliant post – I love seeing all the polishes together and all swatches in the same positions. This month I’m loving the Danflefoot Nail Polish offering called Eye Candy. It’s a super shifty lilac base but with shifts to pink and blue too. It’s got a gorgeous sort of foil finish, similar to the finish on People’s Prince. I’m also loving the Quixotic polish and the thermal, solar and scented polish by MTK

Reply
Priscilla April 25, 2020 - 12:29 am

I’m working very hard on keeping my order this month small after a very large order last month which I excused by saying I would skip this month altogether, oops. As a result, though, everything on my list is required to be a must that cannot be passed, and I definitely have more than one thing.

Anyway, if I had to pick just one to answer the question then Necessary Evil is a good choice. I added this polish to my maybe list when it was just an idea in the spoilers thread (no swatches) because I thought Sugar Skulls was a brilliant inspo. I saw it for the first time on the post. It didn’t simply live up to the idea, it surpassed what I had imagined. An absolute must have.

I am most interested in the soy-based nail polish remover. I tend to soak my polish off, anyway, because I don’t like scrubbing back and forth and getting polish in my cuticles. I am wondering how much of a difference it will make, if I use acetone on a clean up brush, anyway, but I’d be curious about trying it. Goodness knows my skin is always dry!
