Happy Thursday! It’s been a busy week – I’ve been working on these swatches and the last few coming in and preparing for my 10 year blog anniversary giveaway! There’s also a giveaway at the end of this post too – so don’t miss that either. Tonight we’re going to take a look at several of the Polish Pickup January 2022 offerings, and the theme is Spices & Condiments!

Okay so for the Spices & Condiments theme, I have 70 items plus I have 2 new items to share coming to the Polish Pickup Basics shop (and possibly the monthly themed shop as well, but not 100% sure on that)

For the fine details – for all photos shown – I used Vapid Lacquer Commitment Issues Peel Off Base, and for the glossy photos I did use a combination of the top coats including Vibrant Vinyls which was sent as PR this month, and Night Owl Lacquer’s Patience Not Required. I purchased the Vapid Lacquer Commitment Issues and the top coats were sent as pr or as gifts.

Because I am setting up for my blog anniversary giveaway and it requires swatching, I did not have time to also add matte swatches this month. They will be back in next month’s post though.

I do use artificial lighting for my photos. I work during the day and weekend afternoons I’m with Nick and Jacob, so I do most swatching when the sun is setting or gone. My current setup uses GlamCor Pro LIghts and I use the Ultra X Model and this Daylight Company Duo Daylight Lamp (affiliate link).

Also – I changed my nail shape 2 months ago. I’m still getting used to them, but I needed a change. I’m using ENailCouture Full Coverage Gel Nail Tips in Active Almond.

Let’s jump on in. I’m a little early – wishlisting will be opening this coming Sunday and the shop opens January 7th.

Alchemy Lacquers | Spice Spice Baby

Inspiration: Spice Girls

Description: Spice Spice Baby is a lilac toned pink jelly base loaded with red to gold to green shimmer, holographic micro flakes and holo flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: 200

All Mixed Up Lacquers | Him-a-layan on my Peppercorn

Inspiration: Pink Himalayan Salt -n- Pepper

Description: Him-a-layan on my Peppercorn is a rose pink jelly base with rose gold pigment and gold shifting shimmers, coral micro flakes, pink micro holo and white and black matte glitters. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Anchor & Heart Lacquer | Siren’s Cure in Apricot & Honey Cake

Inspiration: Lavender and Honey

Description: Siren’s Cure Cuticle Crème is a lightweight cuticle cream that feels almost whipped like and has a little bounce. It was formulated to promote cuticle healing and nail growth. It contains 75% organic ingredients such as aloe leaf juice, coconut oil, neem seed oil, jojoba oil, and white willow bark extract.

Siren’s Cure soaks in quickly and leaves a non greasy feel behind. A little goes a long way too! While it is a cuticle cream, I actually do sometimes use a dab as a hand lotion.

This is a vegan, bees wax-free product and therefore should not be left in direct heat (hot cars, near heaters, etc) as it could compromise the formula.

The January 2022 scent is Apricot & Honey Cake. I do not have an official description, so all you get is what my nose picks up. This is a light scent and my nose picks up the honey the most and a very light undertone of apricot. It’s not a super strongly fragranced cream and it’s very light and sweet – but because it’s honey it’s not sugary sweet.

Anchor and Heart Lacquer | We Lavender Saving The Bees

Aurora 5 Free Nail Lacquer | Mother of Dragons Fruit

Inspiration: Dragonfruit Powder

Description: Mother of Dragons Fruit is a deep berry purple jelly base packed with pink and purple geo pigment and holo glitters. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This does dry down with a texture due to the glitter content, so it will be best with 2 coats of top coat, or glitter smoother and top coat. Shown is just 1 coat of top coat and you can see that it has a mild texture still.

Price: $12.00 | Cap: 250

Baroness X Polish | Acetone Antidote in Nectarine Blossom & Honey

Inspiration: Honey

Description: Acetone Antidote is an additive for your acetone to protect your skin from the harshness of acetone. It contains glycerin and jojoba oil to help protect and moisturize your nails, skin, and cuticles during polish removal. Plus, no more ashy, dry skin! Simply shake up the vial and pour into your polish remover. I generally pour a full vial into a 10 oz pump bottle, but I recommend shaking it and pouring half in and adding more if you feel you need more.

This month’s Acetone Antidote is scented in Nectarine Blossom & Honey (compare to Jo Malone) – succulent nectarine, peach, cassis and delicate spring flowers melt into the note of acacia honey.

To my nose, this smells like what I would think peaches soaked in honey would smell like – but the honey scent does come out the victor. It’s a little sweet and has a very light musk to it.

Price: $7.50 | Cap: 300

Baroness X Polish | Blue Matcha (Thermal & Fluid Art Polish)

Inspiration: Inspired by butterfly pea tea (aka blue matcha) which will turn from a blurple tea to a bright pink lavender when something acidic is added to it, like lemon.

Description: Blue Matcha is a crelly like thermal fluid art polish, changing from a blue leaning blurple (cold) to a light purple/pink (warm) with a subtle blue shimmer. I used 2 coats alone on index and pinky, and I created the fluid art look using Blue Matcha along with a medium greige and light beige creme.

For the fluid art look, I did the following:

First I needed to make a decal. I recommend a silicone mat to do this, I personally use this one (affiliate link) but you can find them cheaper – I just like the size and having 4 to use.

The method that works best for me is to drop the polishes on top of each other a couple drips at a time (similar to water marbling without the water) and I do 3 drops of Blue Matcha, and then 3 drops of each of the other polishes right on top of each other. I keep doing this until I have a nice blob of polishes in the center of the mat. Then I picked the mat up and just carefully moved it around to get the blob to warp and stretch and flatten out.

Once I saw the desired cells and spread of the polish, I set it aside for about 15 hours to dry (can take less, I just waited 15) and then I cut out the desired size, painted my nails with a sticky base and applied the cut out decals. Then I manipulated and sealed them in with a cotton swab dipped in polish remover. I used an orange stick to help cut off any extra I didn’t need.

Bee’s Knees Lacquer | Smut Is A Must

*I received compensation for this polish*

Inspiration: Spicy Book Scenes

Description: Smut Is A Must is a soft mauve to purple pastel multichrome with rose gold metallic flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

If you are familiar with the polish Gwishin – this is the same formula and it does dry down with a mild texture. It should only take a coat of top coat to smooth – but if you do thick coats of polish, it might take 2 coats of top coat.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: None

Black Dahlia Lacquer | Say When

Inspiration: Say When is inspired by that Olive Garden server patiently waiting for you to end their cheese grating nightmare.

Description: Say When is a yellow toned ivory crelly with gold holo micro glitter and a sprinkling of rainbow iridescent micro glitter flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $11.50 | Cap: No Cap

Colores de Carol | The Captain

Inspiration: Old Spice After Shave Lotion

Description: The Captain is a light taupish grey crelly base with red, periwinkle blue and silver glitters. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Initially I thought this was for Captain Morgan Spiced Rum when I saw the name, but Old Spice is another good one. And yes I think of the commercials when I hear ‘The Captain’ and that’s why I went the rum route.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: None

Description: Sumac Me Feel Like A Natural Woman is a vibrant pink leaning red jelly base with red to pink to orange to gold shifting aurora shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This polish is on the sheer side, so if you have strong VNL it might show through.

Price: $13.31 | Cap: 313

Top Coat by DRK Nails | Seal Glaze

Inspiration:

Description: Seal Glaze was created to help with some difficult polishes, especially purple ones. Seal Glaze has a simple formula that contains a film forming agent.
To use it over nail polish: Apply a very thin coat and let it dry completely. After being applied, it will cause the nail polish to look cloudy and it will clear up as it dries and become glossy.

This also works really well over stamping without the need to “float” the top coat.

Price: $9.00 | Cap: None

Fair Maiden Polish | Tajin Queen

Inspiration: Tajin, specifically on mangoes

Description: Tajin Queen is a neon yellow leaning orange creme with small red flakes and pink to gold aurora shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Glisten & Glow | Glitter Grabber

Inspiration:

Description:  Glitter Grabber gets applied after any glitter or flakie dense manicure is done and it’s fully dry and before your top coat. It aids in creating a smoother surface for your top coat or matte top coat all while “grabbing” that extra texture.

It works by filling in all the nooks and crannies without “sinking” in like top coat usually does.

Apply a coat of this and then top coat over it for a smooth finish.

Price: $8.00 | Cap: None

No Glitter Grabber or Top Coat

Hit The Bottle | Give It A Weigh Now (Stamping Polish)

Inspiration: Inspired by Ground chili powder and the Red Hot Chili Peppers song “Give it Away”

Description: Give It A Weigh Now is a reddish brown stamping polish and one coat creme. For these photos I did 1 coat on index and pinky and stamped over this month’s Moo Moo’s Signatures polish on the middle 2 nails.

Stamping Plate used is Hit The Bottle Vintage Grunge 01

Price: $8.50 | Cap: 300

Hit The Bottle | Sage Advice Pigment Kit

Inspiration: Sage

Description: This is for a kit (even though only 1 item is shown above) but this will come with a black sticky stamping polish called Stuck on You, Sage Advice tealish green holo chrome pigment and a dual ended applicator (think eyeshadow applicator)

To use this set you would paint your base color and then apply a matte top coat. Once done, use the black sticky polish (Stuck on You) to stamp your selected design on. Wait 20-30 seconds, then gently apply pigment to stamping with applicator.

The pigment will not stick to the matte portion of nails which makes this a bit easier. Plus this way you can use the pigment without using the method that requires your stamper (which can make it permanently cloudy)

Once done, either use a water based top coat to protect the design, then the top coat of your choice. You can also skip the water based top coat and float your top coat of choice over, but it does run the risk of dulling the holo effect.

Stamping Plate used is Hit The Bottle Vintage Grunge 01 and Fancy Gloss Got Milk? as the base color.

Price: $14.00 | Cap: 100

KBShimmer | Restoration Drops Nail Polish Thinner

Inspiration:

Description: I actually purchased this item, and it’s the second bottle I’ve owned. I bought this one around September of 2020 after moving and giving the old bottle to my mom since I’d no longer be down the street for her to borrow it.

What’s it for? Well it’s to thin out polishes. After awhile polish (and top coat!) can get thicker, or if it evaporates or just needs a little oomph to get it back to life – then add some of this.

For slightly thickened polish, start with 2-3 drops, shake, then check the consistency. Repeat until you are happy with the result. For dried out or severely thickened polish, fill the bottle with thinner to the fill line, let it sit overnight, and then shake in the morning. You may need to use a toothpick or paperclip to stir, allowing the thinner to reach the bottom of the bottle.

I typically use this with quick dry top coat. Usually when the bottle gets close to the halfway point it gets thicker and stringy, so I add about 12 drops of thinner then top the bottle off with more top coat and shake. This gives me a bottle of new looking top coat and it’s a better consistency.

If you prefer thinner polish in general – this is good to have so you can thin out any polish to your desired consistency.

Price: $7.00 | Cap: None

Description: Spicy Mayo is a pale, muted mustard yellow with an orange tinge with red and orange micro flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Side note: I watch a Youtube channel called Girl With The Dogs and she’s a dog and cat groomer. She grooms a cat named Mayonnaise and when it gets sassy she refers to it as Spicy Mayo – so this makes me think of that cat (it’s a Persian I think)

Price: $12.00 | Cap: None

Lemming Lacquer | Expanding Consciousness

Inspiration: Initially I was inspired by a certain catnip meme regarding space travel and expanding consciousness. Thinking about expanding consciousness I imagined a bubbling lava lamp of psychedelic colors and oil slicks. I considered starting with a black base but this polish needed more buoyancy and black would be too harsh for where my mind was heading. The capri jelly base is dark enough to give the shimmer something to reflect off of and allow that same shimmer to dominate but the brilliant greenish blue is lighthearted and dreamy with ocean vibes.  Another side of the polish is caused by the red-violet and pink shift of the shimmer transforms the base into a vibrant cornflower in certain lighting.

Description: Expanding Consciousness is a deep capri blue jelly packed with red-violet to pink to gold to green shifting shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 200

Luna Wax | Lavender Sage Wax

Inspiration: Inspired by herbs

Description: A fresh herbal lavender sage scent. Each bar has a cute Celtic like picture and a subtle shifty shimmer and can be cut to size preference for melting.

To my nose, this is a very clean herbal scent and the lavender and sage are well balanced so you can smell each – but neither overpower the other. It’s a clean almost laundry like.

A deep base of vanilla bean, rich amber, sandalwood and cashmere musk rounds out this custom blend.

Price: $6.00 | Cap: None

Red Eyed Lacquer | I Like To Eat Apples And Bourbon Da-Balmer

Inspiration: Inspired by apples drizzled in maple and bourbon

Description:  Da Balm-er is a cross between a balm and body butter. It’s creamy like a body butter but has a more emollient feel like a balm would. It’s an intensive treatment you can use anywhere (I love it on cuticles of course) but a little goes a long way. If you use too much – it will feel very oily (like a balm would) so start with a little and build up if you need more.

The January scent is I Like To Eat Apples And Bourbon, which is described as a clean, pleasant scent of caramelized apples drizzled in maple syrup and rounded out with a hint of bourbon.

My nose picks up apples and an almost earthy tone, which I assume is the hint of bourbon. It’s not a super sweet apple scent, but it’s quite nice

Starlight Polish | Just Pepper

Inspiration: Inspired by my spice/herb allergies, and the response I get when I explain. The inevitable question of “Just peppers?” and the imagined shadowy, nearly empty spice cabinet – empty, save for a few powdered peppers.

Description: Just Pepper is an indigo jelly base with red to green shifting old school unicorn pee pigment, which shifts from intense crimson through rich gold to a vibrant green, with translucent red to gold flecks, and microflakes in warm tones of red and copper. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $15.00 | Cap: 200

STELLA CHROMA | Here I Go. Here I Go. (Matte)

Inspiration: Inspired by Salt N Pepa’s Shoop

Description: Here I Go. Here I Go. is a light-medium matte beige with bronze, gold and clear holo glitters. I used 3 thin coats for these photos and left most photos as matte. The final photo shows it as glossy.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: None

STELLA CHROMA | Emulsified Sugar Scrub in Lemon Curd

Inspiration: Inspired by lemon curd

Description: Stella Chroma’s Emulsified Sugar Scrub is an incredibly fine particle sugar that’s densely packed in. Dig a little out of the jar, massage into your hands then rinse and keep rubbing it in while rinsing. Your hands will feel smooth, soft and incredible.

January’s scent is lemon curd and is described as a light lemon scent that’s warmed up with a tad of vanilla. Inspired by the British fruity spread.

To my nose, this is a lovely light lemon citrus scent with a softness brought on by the vanilla.

Price: $6.50 | Cap: None

Sweet Heart Polish | Everything?

Inspiration: Inspired by Everything but the Bagel Seasoning

Description: Everything? is a clear base with a blend of gold, copper, black, and white glitters in a variety of sizes and finishes. I used 3 thin coats brushed on and a glossy top coat.

This will dry with texture, so you may want to use a glitter smoothing top coat and top coat.

Price: $9.50 | Cap: 200

Sweet & Sour Lacquer | If You Mean Green Paprika, Yes Sir!

Inspiration: Inspired by a scene from That 70’s Show

Description: If You Mean Green Paprika, Yes Sir! is a blackened green jelly with lime green metallic flakes and a sprinkle of scattered holo. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: 150

The Soapy Chef | Wax Spice Blend Seasoning Mix

Inspiration: Inspired by Warm Spice Blends

Description: This is the perfect blend for all baked goods wax lovers. This spice blend can be used on its own, or added to your other favorite wax to add a little extra spice. 10 different fragrances are combined to make your home smell just like a bakery.

Scent notes: dark chocolate, fresh cream, smooth butter, roasted nuts, cardamom, chocolate chip cookie, allspice, white ginger, vanilla extract, red nutmeg, toffee, cinnamon sticks, musk, cooked bananas, fresh cocoa, bitter chocolate, espresso beans, clove, Madagascar vanilla, sugar, almond cookies

This is a jar with bits and pieces of wax, so there is no need to cut anything. It will come with a small shovel scoop so you can scoop out the desired amount.

I fully expected this to be almost like an all spice type seasoning mix, so I was pleasantly surprised when I primarily smelled sugar cookie and chocolate. Imagine walking into a cookie shop – bring the level down a few notches and this is it to me. It’s mellow but yummy.

Price: $9.00 | Cap: 50

Vapid Wax | Szechuan Fire Wax

Inspiration: Szechuan

Description: Szechuan Fire is a medley of frankincense, myrrh, ginger and bold Szechuan come together in this unique scent.

On dry sniff, I will be honest and say I was like “nope, nu-uh” cause it’s not my thing. It smelled like dirt and ginger mainly. And I don’t mean like “kinda earthy” I mean dirt. Then I melted it and I ended up liking it. I don’t love it – but I like it. Nick loves it. This is his style.

To my nose (when melting) this is a slightly sweet earthy scent (not straight up dirt like, but like fresh picked herbs straight out of the ground) and a little bite of ginger. It’s a very soothing scent.

Price: $5.00 | Cap: None

Vibrant Vinyls | Double Bond Base Coat in Cinnamon Clove

Inspiration: Inspired by winter spices

Description: Double Bond is a ridge filling base coat and sticky base coat in 1. Best of both worlds. I also sometimes like wearing it alone cause it gives a healthy, sheer, milky look to the nails.

The January scent is Cinnamon Clove. A garland of cinnamon sticks and clove buds.

This is a lighter scent, but it was still easy to detect what the scent was. It smells exactly like a blend of cinnamon sticks and clove and it’s a warm scent that makes me think “holidays” without being IN YOUR FACE.

Price: $8.00 | Cap: None

Vibrant Vinyls | Fast & Hard Top Coat in Cinnamon Clove

Inspiration:

Description: Fast & Hard is a super glossy quick dry top coat that can be applied over wet polish without issue. It also works over stamping, just make sure you float the top coat!

Polish Pickup | Cuticle Nippers

The first new item coming to the PPU shop are cuticle nippers in a rainbow finish!

I personally use these for cutting off hang nails and honestly for my toe nails. I hate cutting my toenails with normal clippers. Nick stole my other pair to cut his fingernails cause he hates normal nail clippers.

You can also use these as small scissors and to cut small decals or vinyls.

They are sharp and should be used with caution. You can clip your cuticles with them as originally intended, but I’m strongly in the “don’t cut cuticles camp” but I know some do it and are just fine with it.

These will be in the basic shop and may make appearances in the normal shop.

Prices TBA.

Polish Pickup | Cuticle Pusher

The second new items is a dual ended cuticle pusher. One end is smaller than the other, which I love because most cuticle pushers like this I can’t use on my pinky nail. Now I can.

I also use these to scoop out some pigment if needed – they fit perfectly in the little jars and are curved enough to act as a spoon.

This is also in the rainbow finish.

Price TBA

Polish Pickup January 2022 | Spices & Condiments
