It feels like I literally just did my September post… but here we are again for the Polish Pickup October 2021 post and the theme this month is Monsters & Mythical Creatures!

As usual – I’m still missing a few items and they should be arriving within the next couple of days (hopefully… if USPS cooperates)

A lot has happened in the last few weeks. Jacob started his sophomore year of high school, and he’s at his new school (all last year he went to a neighboring high school but was fully remote and never actually stepped foot on school grounds, and then we bought this house so now he’s doing in person schooling again.) We got our oil tank replaced. Yay! That was fun (not really) and I’m quickly coming up on my year anniversary at my new job in a medical office as a patient coordinator. Other stuff has been happening, but that’s in the background. I’m also preparing to celebrate my 10 year blogiversary and I have a fairly big giveaway planned, so I’m also working on that in the background.

As many swatchers can tell you – August and September of this year for swatching seemed fairly brutal. There were a lot more releases crammed in together, and more collaborations and annual boxes came out. I kept up on my obligations fairly well – but this weekend we’re going to see about 7 more posts from me… I think. About that. After that though – it’s smooth sailing since this was the big Halloween/Fall push.

Anyways – onto Polish Pickup for October!

The theme this month is Monsters & Mythical Creatures… again. We are revisiting this theme, but unlike some other themes – there was a pretty good gap in between. We last saw this theme in October of 2017 when Polish Pickup was only 6 or 7 months old.

For the fine details – for all photos shown – I used Vapid Lacquer Commitment Issues Peel Off Base, and for the glossy photos I did use a combination of the top coats including Vibrant Vinyls which was sent as PR this month, and Night Owl Lacquer’s Patience Not Required. For all matte swatches I used Night Owl Lacquer Gone Matte. I purchased the Vapid Lacquer Commitment Issues and the top coats were sent as pr or as gifts.

I do use artificial lighting for my photos. I work during the day and weekend afternoons I’m with Nick and Jacob, so I do most swatching when the sun is setting or gone. My current setup uses GlamCor Pro LIghts and I use the Ultra X Model and this Daylight Company Duo Daylight Lamp (affiliate link).

This is an EXTREMELY photo heavy post. If there is something specific you are looking for – on desktop hit CTRL + F and type what you are searching for. Otherwise, enjoy the long scroll down the page, and of course the giveaway at the end.

The October shop will be open from October 1st through October 4th and wishlisting opens Sunday, September 26th.

You will notice the shop itself is a little lighter. Typically there’s 200+ items each month but it’s been toned down a little so there’s closer to 150ish items.

Let’s jump in.

Alchemy Lacquers | Snowman of the Mountain

Inspiration:  Abominable

Description: Snowman of the Mountain is a dark periwinkle crelly base with purple to red shifting flakes, red to pink shifting flakes, blue to purple shifting flakes and black flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: 200

All Mixed Up Lacquers | What the Fwoop?

Inspiration:  Inspired by The Fwooper from Fantastic Beasts

Description: What The Fwoop? is a medium pink linear holographic with teal to blue to purple to magenta ultrachrome chameleon micro flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 150

Anchor & Heart Lacquer | Iron Anchor

*Received as PR from a previous shop, including here since it’s being offered again*

Inspiration:  Inspired by lyrics from Tyler, The Creator’s 2018 song for (the amazing) The Grinch movie:
“You’re a monster
Your heart’s an empty hole
You’re a goner
You got garlic in your soul.”

Description: Iron Anchor Strengthening Base Coat contains garlic extract which is know to be an antibacterial/antiseptic and works against bacteria and fungus – often the culprit of peeling and brittle nails. I don’t have issues with peeling or brittle nails and my nails are fairly strong, but right now I also have obviously false nails on. However I did test this out when I had my real nails and did a test with it.

When I wore this for tested (while I still had my natural nails) I got 11 solid days of wear. After 7 days there was visible tip wear (again, I type at my day job and while blogging – but I also play video games on the PC) and at 11 days the tip wear was incredibly visible and nail growth showed too much – so I removed it. But I had no significant chips that made me cringe seeing my nails.

Price: $8.00 | Cap: 200

AURORA 5-Free Nail Lacquer | His Name is Grogu (Glow In The Dark)

Inspiration:  Inspired by Grogu, aka Baby Yoda

Description: His Name Is Grogu is a sheer dusty teal jelly base packed with green pigment with aqua, gold and green geo shimmer. It also glows green in the dark! I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 200

Baroness X | Alicorns w/ Frickin’ Lightning Bolts Acetone Antidote

Inspiration:  Inspired by Alicorns and their strong affinity for lightning. “Alicorns being completely immune to lightning strikes, like to play deep within a thunderstorm. When lightning strikes them, alicorns replenish their magic. Being charged up like a battery.”

Description: Scented in Alicorns w/ Frickin’ Lightning Bolts, this is a house blend of fiji dates, lemon peel and a touch of spiced plum pudding. It’s a lighter scent, we went for something warm, slightly tart, and spiced, both for the time of year and the inspo.

This reminds me of NERDS candy scent. It’s sweet, tart and fruity!

Acetone Antidote is an additive for your acetone to protect your skin from the harshness of acetone. It contains glycerin and jojoba oil to help protect and moisturize your nails, skin, and cuticles during polish removal. Plus, no more ashy, dry skin! Simply shake up the vial and pour into your polish remover. I generally pour a full vial into a 10 oz pump bottle, but I recommend shaking it and pouring half in and adding more if you feel you need more.

Price: $8.00 | Cap: None

Baroness X | Alicorns w/ Frickin’ Lightning Bolts (Magnetic)

Inspiration:  Inspired by Alicorns and their strong affinity for lightning. Alicorns being completely immune to lightning strikes, like to play deep within a thunderstorm. When lightning strikes them, alicorns replenish their magic. Being charged up like a battery.

Description: Alicorns w/ Frickin’ Lightning Bolts is a light grey crelly base with silvery lavender magnetic pigment, as well as blue sister unicorn pee pigment, and black to red micro flecks. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos. I only used a magnet on the middle 2 nails so you can also see it used both ways.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: None

Bee’s Knees Lacquer | Gwishin

Inspiration:  Inspired by the egg-faced ghost of Korean mythology

Description: Gwishin is a soft lilac pastel multichrome that shifts to a medium purple and loaded with silvery peridot metallic flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This will dry with a slight texture, so you may need 2 coats of top coat.

The base of this shade is interesting and it’s sheer, but the multichrome shift appears to be more of a densely packed shimmer, so while the shift is there – the silvery peridot flakes to overtake it a bit. But the purpley goodness does peek through and it makes this an interestingly unique polish.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: None

Black Dahlia Lacquer | Peel Off Base Coat

**This product was sent as a previous PR item, and is being featured again in PPU**

Inspiration:

Description: This isn’t the latex type peel off for short term (swatching usually) manis. This is a clear peel off base coat perfect for glittery creations so you don’t have to scrub to remove with acetone. Peel Off Base is like UNT but a thicker consistency, so those who are like me don’t need to use 2 coats so it peels off nicely. Once on, this looks like a normal clear base coat, then top it with the polishes of your choice and peel off when ready. I did test it on my Cindy hand – and it lasted 5 days before wearing down a bit, and 8 days before a nail coating popped off and vanished during my move.

This can take a few minutes to dry, so be ready for that. Because it’s clear, it’s harder to tell when fully dry – so I applied, waited about 3-4 minutes and then touched a corner gently to see if it was still tacky or not. I found all 5 nails on one hand were fully dry to apply polish in about 5.5 minutes.

When ready to remove your mani, use an orange stick and gently push up around the cuticles and then peel or just continue to push up with the orange stick.

Price: $7.50 | Cap: None

Bluebird Lacquer | Monster Marsh

By Dany Vianna | Unicorn eReader Bag

Inspiration: Unicorns

Description: The Unicorn eReader Bag is a cute unicorn printed fabric bag that carries your eReader. Don’t have an eReader? It also can carry nail supplies like nail files, cuticle pushers and other slimmer items.

It’s approximately 19cm x 14cm.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 50

Bygone Apothecary | Medusa Hair Balm

Inspiration: Medusa

Description: This balm is great for adding moisture and shine to unruly flyaways, taming split ends, scrunching out the crunch, or as a moisture boost pre-shampoo. It is packed with moisturizing oils, so start sparingly, especially if your hair is fine and straight as it can look greasy. CG method friendly – silicone free.

The fragrance is a dark floral blend, with notes of ginger, black pepper, ylang ylang, gardenia, jasmine, orchid, and clove. It finishes with amber, patchouli, sandalwood, vanilla, and musk. Smells like a sultry bouquet of flowers, or a high-end perfume you’d expect to be worn by a woman with killer eyeliner and a great leather jacket.

This balm can also be used on elbows, knees and toes – or as an intense cuticle balm.

I am a sucker for clever touches on items – and the lid to this looks and feels like stone. Given the inspo – I thought it was an incredibly clever tie-in

Price: $8.00 | Cap: 45

Cadillacquer | Trolljegeren

Inspiration: Inspired by the movie Troll Hunter

Description: Trolljegeren is a pastel blue jelly base packed with gold to copper to red to pink color shifting shimmer, as well as matte aquamarine hex glitters in a variety of sizes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This shade does dry down with a mild texture due to the glitters, so you might need 2 coats of top coat to smooth.

Description: Pyramid of Silence is a dusty taupe crelly base, full of scattered holo sparkle, red and gunmetal micro flakes, dark grey flakes, small red glitter, dark grey flakes, small red glitter, and silver holo micro flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This is a really interesting and complex scent. It’s very much a fall scent and Nick is actually really loving it. My nose primarily picks up the cedarwood and patchouli but there’s a smokiness to it and beneath that you get the slightest hint of citrus.

Fruity, sweet, and succulent notes of fresh-from-the-market juicy watermelon, sticky cantaloupe, and pure sugarcane; blooms of lilies and orchids; plus, salty ocean breezes and pure white sand combine beautifully to make this luscious fragrance. One whiff, and you’ll feel like you’re lounging on a tropical beach watching frolicking mermaids rule the sea. If you like Just Beachy, you will love this boldly colored scrub swirled in hues of purple, pink, and aqua, with a hint of pink biodegradable glitter on top. Featuring a heat-sealed lid for no leaks in transit.

This might be one of my favorite scents. It’s relaxing, it’s beachy, there’s a touch of fruity, touch of floral and that salty air scent. It’s balanced well so none of the profiles overpower the others.

Description: Yeti on the Roof is a pale lavender crelly base with bright pink shimmer and black flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 320

Pretty Beautiful Unlimited | From the Ashes

Inspiration: Inspired by The Phoenix

Description: From The Ashes is a black to red multichrome pigment and black to red multichrome flakes with red and black holographic micro glitters and purple to red to gold crystal chameleon flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 200

Pretty Beautiful Unlimited | Sweet Fire Wax

Inspiration: Inspired by The Phoenix

Description: Smoke and wood warm a union of clove, amber, sandalwood, and patchouli. Light hints of fruit, musk and leather. Subtle hints of marshmallow, honey, chocolate and vanilla. Finished off with tonalities of polished leather and fine bourbon.

This is a nice, warm, musky scent. The leather and bourbon I don’t smell as much but they do help balance out the sweetness of the fruit, marshmallow, honey, chocolate and vanilla.

Price: $6.00 | Cap: None

Red Eyed Lacquer | You Dessert It! Da Balm-er

Inspiration: Inspired by Hedylogos god of sweet talk

Description: Da-Balmer is a cross between a balm and body butter. It’s creamy like a body butter but has a more emollient feel like a balm would. It’s an intensive treatment you can use anywhere (I love it on cuticles of course) but a little goes a long way. If you use too much – it will feel very oily (like a balm would) so start with a little and build up if you need more.

The October Da Balmer is scented in a blend of warm caramel vanilla and Angel food cake and it smells DELICIOUS! The warm caramel is the dominant scent.

Price: $7.50 | Cap: 100

Inspiration: Inspired by the crystal foxes from SW

Description: Where’d The Crystal Critters Go? is a grey crelly with silver to blue to green shifting flakes and a red to gold shifting shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: 150

Rogue Lacquer | Sea-Horse

Inspiration: Inspired by the Greek mythical creature Hippocampus.

Description: Sea-Horse is an ocean blue jelly base loaded with pink to orange color shifting flakes, holo flakes and turquoise metallic flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Dries with a slight texture, may need 2 coats of top coat for a smooth finish.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: None

Sassy Sauce Polish | Reptile Dysfunction (Thermal)

Inspiration: Inspired by Medusa Tattoo

Description: Reptile Dysfunction is an eggplant (cold) to violet (warm) crelly based thermal with strong red to gold shimmer, as well as blue to green to purple shifting ghost flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: 400

Scofflaw Nail Varnish | Attack of the Dustbunnies

Inspiration: Inspired by the scariest wee beast!

Description: Attack Of The Dustbunnies is a grey crelly base filled with gunmetal, silver, and iridescent flakes, and teal, coral, aqua and silver glitters ranging from micro to medium. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This dries with texture, and you will need 2 coats of top coat to smooth.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: None

Starlight and Sparkles | Sea Scale Pendant

Inspiration: Inspired by Sirens, mermaids, sea dragons, and more! All the beautifully scaly water creatures of myth.

Description: The Sea Scale pendant uses a black pendant tray and a glass cabochon, and teal to violet old school UP sibling pigment, which shifts from a rich teal to glowy violet, and flashes aqua and purple at the extremes of its color range. The outline of the same overlapping spiral/criss-cross pattern that is on the back of the pendants shows under the pigment in the pendant, making a pattern reminiscent of scales.

The glass cabochon in the pendant is 1″ (25mm). The pendant itself is 1.1″ (28mm) wide and 1.4″ (35mm) tall, including the loop at the top. The interior width of the loop is approximately .17″ (4.5mm). The pendant comes on an 18” black cord necklace with nickel free findings and extender chain, and can be removed from the cord, so you’ll be able to swap that if you have a necklace you prefer to wear it with!

I love the cool tones of the shifts and how it goes from a deep blue to vibrant teal.

Price: $11.00 | Cap: 200

Starlight and Sparkles | Siren Sea

Inspiration: Inspired by The Sirens of Greek mythology, and the beautiful but dangerous waters in which they lived.
According to Homer, the Sirens lived on an island in the Strait of Messina, between Italy and Sicily.

Description: Siren Sea is a medium blue jelly base loaded with teal to violet shifting unicorn pee sibling pigment, aurora flakes that shift from sea green to purple, as well as green to blue. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $16.00 | Cap: 200

STELLA CHROMA | Gossamer Gets A Mani

Inspiration: Inspired by Gossamer, the hairy red villain with the cool sneakers from Looney Tunes! Gossamer made his debut in the Bugs Bunny cartoon called Hair Raising Hare. In it, Bugs gives him an amazing manicure and he ends up with a funky black and yellow french!

Description: Gossamer Gets A Mani is a red leaning orange crelly base with black and yellow glitters ranging from micro to medium in size. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: None

STELLA CHROMA | Spa Day Emulsified Sugar Scrub

Inspiration: Inspired by Gossamer got a Spa Day courtesy of Bugs Bunny, and you can too!

Description: Stella Chroma’s Emulsified Sugar Scrub is an incredibly fine particle sugar that’s densely packed in. Dig a little out of the jar, massage into your hands then rinse and keep rubbing it in while rinsing. Your hands will feel smooth, soft and incredible.

This scent is one of the most popular in the shop, and for good reason! It smells amazing. Light, clean, and relaxing. The quintessential spa scent. It has a very light citrus kick while still being soothing.

Price: $6.50 | Cap: None

Supernatural Lacquer | The Nightmeow Before Christmas

Inspiration: Inspired by the Yule Cat from Icelandic folklore.

Description: The Nightmeown Before Christmas is a black jelly base loaded with red to gold shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $12.00 | Cap: 150

Sweet & Sour Lacquer | Back to Nature (Magnetic)

Inspiration: Inspired by Swamp Thing

Description: Back To Nature is a murky blackened green jelly base with black flakes, as well as green to gold to copper multichrome magnetic micro flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

I magnetized the middle and ring fingers and left pinky and index alone so you can see it both ways.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 250

Sweet Heart Polish | Firey Gang

Inspiration: Firey Gang is inspired by the odd firey forest creatures, the Fireys, from the movie Labyrinth.

Description: Firey Gang is a super juicy pink tinged red jelly is full of pink to orange to gold crystal chameleon flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $12.00 | Cap: 200

Sweet & Sour Lacquer | Gloss Sauce

Inspiration:

Description: **Please note that I purchased this bottle months ago – but I have been using this top coat for over a year. The bottle is different now and mine is an older label**

Gloss Sauce is a 3-free quick dry top coat. It dries very quickly, there is no shrinkage, and it does not smear nail art! It can be very frustrating to ruin the nail art you worked so hard on! With Gloss Sauce, you won’t have to worry about ruining your watermarbles, stamps, and nail vinyl art. Its gloss lasts for days and your manicure can last up to a week, with proper application.

Price: $7.00 | Cap: None

The Crafty Taco | Snake Sisters Hair Pin Set

Inspiration: Inspired by the Gorgons: Stheno and Euryale

Description: This pair of simple bronze-toned hair pins were inspired by the Gorgon sisters Stheno and Euryale. You might be more familiar with their non-immortal little sister Medusa. These sisters were reported to have terrifying fangs, bright brass hands, and venomous snakes for hair.

Drawing from that description, the pair of hair pins come in an aged bronze tone with subtle snake print 10mm glass cabochons finished with a snake-like green to gold multichrome. Each hair pin is handmade and no two will be exactly alike.

These are simple, elegant and beautiful. I love hair pins – I have a lot of hair and the side swept bangs that often get on my nerves – so I use pins like these to bring them out of my eyes… otherwise I throw my hair up in a messy bun.

Price: $11.00 | Cap: 15

The Soapy Chef | Oh Gnome You Didn’t Scoopable Wax

Inspiration: Inspired by Garden gnomes

Description: This scoopable wax transports you to a beautiful garden, filled with flowers and of course, garden gnomes.

Scent notes: Sicillian Lemon, Ruby grapefruit, sage, Basil leaves

I really love waxes like this one for common areas like the kitchen and living room. It’s not sweet like vanilla or spicy like cinnamon, but gives a nice, clean and welcoming scent to the area.

This is a softer wax so it’s scoopable and has a cute little garden gnome scene inside.

Side note: Before heading to Nashville for PBE, I made comments for people to look for the garden gnome due to my size.

Price: $8.00 | Cap: 100

Treo Lacquer | Dawn Bearer

Inspiration: Inspired by a beautiful piece of art of a unicorn in a dawn palette.

Description: Dawn Bearer is a purple jelly base filled gold to red shifting shimmer, and accented with indigo and pale yellow glitter. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 160

Unicorn Magic Skincare | Deluxe Cuticle Rescue in Apple Pecan Sage

Inspiration: Inspired by Cornish Pixies from the Harry Potter movie

Description: Deluxe Cuticle Rescue is a thick and nourishing cuticle cream. It has the thickness of a balm, but a creamy lotion appearance and feel. This is perfect for a non greasy cuticle item, and a little goes a long way.

Apple Pecan Sage – freshly picked apples mixed with cinnamon & spices, with a nutty and slightly earthy undertone.

I am really loving all the apple skin care this month. This one reminds me of apple cinnamon pancakes with maple syrup.

Price: $5.75 | Cap: 190

Vibrant Vinyls | Double Bond Base Coat

Inspiration: Mermaids

Description: Double Bond is a ridge filling base coat and sticky base coat in 1. Best of both worlds. I also sometimes like wearing it alone cause it gives a healthy, sheer, milky look to the nails.

This month’s scent is We Mermaid For Each Other which captures the aroma of blue raspberry, pop of strawberry, Georgia peach and a hint of spun sugar. It reminds me of a more toned down blue raspberry blow pop!

Price: $8.00 | Cap: None

Vibrant Vinyls | Fast & Hard Quick Dry Top Coat

Inspiration: Mermaids

Description: Fast & Hard is a super glossy quick dry top coat that can be applied over wet polish without issue. It also works over stamping, just make sure you float the top coat!

This month’s scent is We Mermaid For Each Other which captures the aroma of blue raspberry, pop of strawberry, Georgia peach and a hint of spun sugar. It reminds me of a more toned down blue raspberry blow pop!

Price: $8.00 | Cap: None

Whatcha | BBCream For Nails

Inspiration: Inspired by Satyr

Description: BB Cream for Nails is a creamy slightly pink beige base that offers ridge filling properties as well as vitamins for nails. It also helps blur the line between nail and free edge.

I used 1 coat on my nails and it does act as a cream and can also be used as a one coat nail color.

Price: $10.00 | Cap: 150
