Polish Pickup January 2024 | Deadly Plants

Disclosure: I am a paid employee for Polish Pickup. While this post is not sponsored, I do have a relationship with the hosting collaboration shop.

It’s time for a new year and some new themes! I’m hoping in 2024 we see a lot of fresh, unique and new themes for Polish Pickup… and I’m enjoying what we’re kicking off with! Polish Pickup for January 2024 is Deadly Plants!

I’ve been ready to start typing this post for a few days while waiting for things to arrive. I think I’m waiting on one more polish but it’s not set to deliver until January 2nd and I wanted to get this up before then. I will add it to the post when it arrives though.

We had a good holiday week though, and it’s my last Christmas before my son turns 18 and is officially an adult, so I’ve been a bit of a weepy mess all week. He’ll be 18 in February and… when they say that the time goes quickly – they really mean it.

So yeah.. I was delayed a bit in posting.

But we’re here – I’m ready and… it’s a good month. I have 45 items for January currently with one on the way.

As usual, you can check it all out on my YouTube channel – I swatch each polish, show their special effect (if any) and sort of demo each product so you can see the consistency or how it is used.

For the fine details – for all photos shown – I used Vapid Lacquer Commitment Issues Peel Off Base, and for the glossy photos I did Monarch Lacquer Hi-Def Shine Top coat (sent as PR and I’ve also purchased).  For all textured polishes, I did use Glisten & Glow Glitter Grabber (PR) and Monarch Lacquer top coat over it. For matte photos I used Anchor & Heart Lacquer Sea Glass (Gifted and Purchased by me)

For my lighting set up I use artificial lighting due to my day job, my set up involves 2 Neatfi XL Lamps from Amazon (affiliate link) as well as this Daylight Company Duo Daylight Lamp (affiliate link).

For my nails – they are Apres Gel X nails throughout this post, and the style is Extra Short Stiletto.

Let’s do this!

Alchemy Lacquers | Hydrangea

Inspiration: Inspired by the multi-hued Hydrangea!

Description: Hydrangea is a crelly based thermal that shifts from purple (cold) to pale blue (warm) and is packed with pink to gold to green shifting medium sized shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy and matte top coat for these photos.

Price: $12.50 | Cap: 300

All Mixed Up Lacquers | Chompers Gonna Chomp

Inspiration: Piranha Plant from Mario

Description: Chompers Gonna Chomp is a medium green jelly base loaded with green to gold shifting shimmer pigment, green micro glitters, green micro flakes, subtle scattered holo and red to black micro ultrachrome chameleon flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy and matte top coat for these photos.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 250

Baroness X | Acetone Antidote in Poison Guava Sangria

Inspiration: Inspired by the Beach Apple / Poison Guava tree in Florida.

Description: Acetone Antidote (AA) is an additive for your acetone to protect your skin from the harshness of acetone. It contains glycerin and jojoba oil to help protect and moisturize your nails, skin, and cuticles during polish removal. Plus, no more ashy, dry skin!

Scent description:
Top: Currant, Orange, Lime, Guava
Heart: Nectarine, White Plum, Bellflower
Base: Agave Woods, Amber, Passionfruit

My nose immediately picks up the guava and plum with a little citrus kick from the lime and then a light floral that adds a touch of sweetness to it.

I shake the glass bottle, add 1/4 of the bottle to 10oz of remover (I use Zoya Remove+) – shake the remover container to mix and I’m all set. This stuff is part of the reason I can pump out swatches without destroying my cuticles/skin/nails

Price: $8.25 | Cap: 155

Beaux Reves Lacquer | Blooming Azalea (PAID PR)

Inspiration: Azalea

Description: Blooming Azalea is a plum to mauve to magenta shifting base with green to aqua shimmer and a coralish pink magnetic pigment. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy and matte top coat.

I only magnetized the middle and ring nails so you can see it both ways.

Inspiration: inspired by one of BKL’s favorite books of 2023 by Hannah Whitten

Bluebird Lacquer | I’m Fonda Your Flora (PAID PR)

Inspiration: Solanum dulcamara also known as climbing nightshade is an invasive species that is entirely poisonous.

Description: I’m Fonda Your Flora is a violet jelly base full of medium particle shimmer that shifts from purple to blue to green. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy and matte top coat for these photos.

This shade does alter a bit with top coat, but the top coat version is what the maker intended. When you apply the polish a little more gold and green are visible, then when top coat is added – it transforms to a richer violet with a stronger blue shift. If you want to retain the initial shade, add a layer of water based top coat (UNT or Apipila Smudge Proof) as a protective layer between the polish and top coat.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 400

Chamaeleon Nails | Atropa Belladonna

Inspiration: Inspired by the poisonous nightshade plant: here’s some historical background of how it got its name – Atropine (the poison in the plant) is classified as an anticholinergic drug that affects the nervous system. Drops prepared from the nightshade plant were used to dilate women’s pupils, an effect considered attractive. “Bella donna” in Italian means “beautiful woman” – so that’s how it got its name.

Description: Atropa Belladonna is a jelly based thermal that shifts from black (cold) to colorless (warm) and is filled with a variety of iridescent flakes shifting purple to violet to pink to orange to green, as well as black flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy and matte top coat.

Price: $13.50 | Cap: 400

Clionadh Cosmetics | Sundew (PAID PR)

Inspiration: inspired by one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants, Sundews. The roundleaf sundew is common to most parts of Canada.

Description: Sundew is a yellow leaning chartreuse jelly base loaded with green to idnigo shifting large particle shimmer and red metallic shreds. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy and matte top coat for these photos.

Limitless is a 5 free quick dry top coat with a nice consistency that isn’t too thick or too thin. This is actually also my go-to top coat for magnetics because it just seems to work better with them for me in holding a line

Limitless is 5 free and the 5 are: Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor, Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Toluene, and Formaldehyde.

Stamping Plate used is HIt The Bottle Vintage Grunge 01

Price: $10.00 | Cap: None

Glisten & Glow | Quick Dry Top Coat

Inspiration:

Description: Glisten & Glow top coat is perfect for nail art and stamping and is a long lasting glassy quick dry top coat. It dries fast, has a very glossy, high shine and floats well over nail art.

This top coats dries fast (about 4 minutes on me) and glows under blacklight. Also pairs beautifully with G&G Glitter Grabber if you picked that up in previous shops.

Plate used: EDK Miscellaneous

Price: $8.50 | Cap: None

Hearts and Promises | Monkshood Blue Beauty

Inspiration: Monkshood

Description: Monkshood Blue Beauty is a semi sheer medium blue jelly base with red to orange to gold aurora shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy and matte top coat for these photos.

This shade is a little darker in person, but it is also leaning into sheerer – so you may see visible nail line.

Price: $13.00 | Cap: 300

Indie by Patty Lopes | Dragon Lily

KBShimmer | Sugar Scrub in Cherry Almond (PAID PR)

Inspiration: cyanide
Watching murder mysteries, listening to true crime podcasts, and reading whodunit novels are guilty pleasures that many of us have. Personally, I feel smart when there is a clue given and I know exactly where it’s leading. Being told the detective caught a hint of bitter almond or cherries have many true crime fans knowing that the victim must have ingested cyanide. And it is that very cyanide scent that inspired this scrub.

Description: KBShimmer’s sugar scrubs are good for all over the body or as a hand scrub, the sugar particles are medium grit so they do a good job getting dry spots on your body situated.

This is described as ‘The sweet, classic aroma of juicy maraschino cherries and sweet notes of almonds combine to form a luscious fragrance perfect for a Cherry Almond Scrub. Paired with a bold red color, this scrub’s scent is perfect for those wanting a bit of brightness during the day.’

This smells (to me) just like those almond cookies with the candied maraschino cherries on the top. It’s dead on like that to me and makes my mouth water. I think i convinced Nick to bake some too.

Inspiration: Blue Lotus Flower

Description: Blue Lotus is a crelly based thermal that goes from cornflower blue (cold) to peach (warm) with a green to orange to gold shimmer mixed in. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy and matte top coat for these photos.

There are some hints that it can go to a deeper greyed out cornflower, but it only showed a little and with the slightest body heat it went away. So It is more of a tri thermal with a greyed out blue being the “coldest” shade.

Reply

There’s definitely a handful that look absolutely amazing, but the Lemming Lacquer is top of my list this month!

Reply
Kati M December 29, 2023 - 5:24 pm

Some KRAZEE greens! Eyeing the Danglefoot (not swatched here), the Rogue (I have several light greens w pink shimmer, but they are so sheer, and this one looks like it’s more opaque and has more ‘presence’). Leesha’s Lacquer has defmcaught my attention – but on the fence because my nails don’t always react to thermals so that the contrast is noticeable…

Reply
Christina O December 29, 2023 - 9:08 pm

The thermal also caught my eye, but I’ve never tried one, so I’m kinda iffy right now!

Reply
Kati M January 1, 2024 - 3:57 pm

Christina O – if you have longer nails where you have at least 1/16″ nail tip OFF the skin – it has more of a chance… just make sure you like its warm state colour – that way, if it doesn’t change much, you at least have a polish colour you like…
