I can’t believe it’s that time again already, but it’s here! It’s time to look at my swatches and reviews of the Polish Pickup January 2020 Written In The Stars theme!

I took a little time off posting the last 2 weeks to focus on my son and life in general. I’ve still swatched a ton to prep for Polish Pickup and other releases coming up, but I spent more time away from the keyboard. We had a wonderful Christmas and my son got spoiled rotten by myself and Nick. His big gift was an Apple Watch series 5, which he’s absolutely loving. He’s a little young to have one (almost 14), but with his grades (he’s been honor roll throughout Junior High) and how hard he’s been working on his projects – I went ahead and spoiled him.

I wanted to get this post going because Jacob and I have a fun weekend planned of spending his gift cards and seeing Jumanji! I also have to exchange my gift from Nick (a gorgeous Tiffany’s 5 link bangle) to the next size up. Otherwise, if I slide it on – it’s never coming off.

So for the Polish Pickup January 2020 Written In The Stars shop – I have 103 items to share. I am waiting on 2-3 more items to show up (both international – Girly Bits PPU & IPU items, as well as Cadillacquer) which will put us at about 106 for the month. Once I get those in, I’ll pop them into this post.

The theme this month is Written In The Stars, which is anything galaxy or astrological. It’s fairly open ended, and a lot of makers went with Zodiac type inspiration. I’m on the cusp of Pisces and Aries but my birthday is actually within Aries (March 22nd) and I have to say – I’m thrilled with all the Aries inspiration.

This month is very purple and blue heavy. Fairly normal for a “stars” anything theme. I love it since I’m a purple fan. I did, and still do, have a cold and congestion. I am doing any scented item to the best of my ability – but please keep in mind that my sniffer is clogged. I was hoping it would unclog by the time I did this post, but it’s still at about half what it usually is.

3Cheers4Ears | Galaxy Phone Grip

Inspiration: Inspired by Orion constellation and it’s biggest star Betelgeuse.

Description: The Galaxy Phone Grip makes it easier to hold your phone, or use it as a kickstand. It pops out to grip with your fingers, and when done using, just pop it back down and it lays flush with your case/phone. This is an oval shaped grip with a stunning galaxy scene on it, and when you turn the lights out – there’s a glow in the dark Orion constellation that appears. It’s very comfortable to hold and is easily applied with a sticky adhesion where it attaches to the phone.

77 Nail Lacquer | The Enigma of Pisces

Inspiration: Inspired by The Enigma of Pisces is inspired by artwork by Fernanda Fernandez.

Description: The Enigma of Pisces is a muted turquoise crelly base with itty bitty red microglitters, orange shimmer, and red to blue to purple iridescent flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This is a deeper turquoise in person.

All Mixed Up Lacquers | Star Gazing (Tri Thermal)

Inspiration: Inspired by an image from Web of purple, blue, green sky with stars.

Description: Star Gazing is a tri thermal that shifts from denim blue (cold) to medium purple (warm) to dusty mint green (hot) with scattered holo and shifting crystal flakes. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

With my cold and cooties – thermals were not my friend this month. The purple shift isn’t showing well since I had a fever. Please check out other photos in the Polish Pickup group to see it.

Alter Ego Body Care Products | What’s Your Sign?

Inspiration: Inspired by all the stars, not just any one constellation or horoscope.

Description: What’s Your Sign? is a silver holographic with both linear and scattered holo mixed in. Originally it was made to be a top coat but can also be used on its own. I used 3 coats for these photos, and the final images show 1 coat over black.

Anchor & Heart Lacquer | Aquemini

Inspiration: Inspired by OutKast’s 1996 album cover of the same name. It is pronounced a-quem-in-i, combining aquarius and gemini into one!

Description: Aquemini is a black creme base with green to blue to purple multichrome shimmer, micro gold flakes, pink holo micro glitter, as well as gold and raspberry pink glitters. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Anchor & Heart Lacquer | Shipshape Hemp Hand & Body Lotion

Inspiration: Not Specified

Description: Shipshape Hemp Hand & Body Lotion is the newest addition to the Anchor & Heart Lacquer Essentials line of hand care products! Ultra-moisturizing, fast absorbing, no sticky residue, and the perfect consistency – not too thin or thick! I’ve only had this a week, but it’s perfect for me to use in between swatching. It gives my skin a boost of moisture without leaving a greasy looking residue behind on camera.

Organic hemp seed oil (THC free) is the star of the show, providing essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that help replenish skin of all types. Shipshape is vegan, cruelty free, with no added parabens, phthalates, or gluten, and formulated with 84% organic ingredients!

The scent is Moon Emotions which is a Lolita Lempicka perfume dupe. It’s a mix of fresh citrus, cashmere, and sandalwood. It’s light and I definitely picked up the sandalwood and cashmere scent. It’s warm and oddly soothing to me.

Inspiration: Inspired by  Aquarius

Description: My Ruling Planet is Uranus is a clear base loaded with blue flakes, with a mix of ultrachrome chameleon flakes added that flash green, purple, pink, orange and gold. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Baroness X | Acetone Antidote – Green Dragon

Inspiration: Year of the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac.

Description: Acetone Antidote is an additive for your acetone to protect your skin from the harshness of acetone. It contains glycerin and jojoba oil to help protect and moisturize your nails, skin, and cuticles during polish removal. Plus, no more ashy, dry skin.

I personally use mine mostly in Zoya Remove+ remover – it’s not just for pure acetone.

This month’s scent is Green Dragon which is a custom house blend of green tea with lemongrass. I definitely smell the green tea and then get a hit of lemongrass. It’s a very soothing and calming type scent. I’m going to be buying 2-3 backup bottles when shop opens.

Effect Topper by Baroness X | X Marks The Spot Liquid Nail Art

Inspiration: The name is inspired by how horoscopes and predictions often say ___ marks the ___. Example: “The New Moon marks the beginning of a new lunar and personal cycle.” We just inserted “X” from our Baroness X branding and “Spot” for the effect of this topper/smoosh polish.

Description: X Marks The Spot is a black fluid art polish with a scattered holo effect. I’ve never done fluid art, and I’ve never made decals – but I was able to do it in my first go (it was that easy to work with!) I actually followed a video tutorial from Courtney of Polished Lifting to do the fluid art, so I recommend checking that out.

For these photos I used the method linked above, and I used X Marks The Spot with Baroness X Unclad and a deep red creme.

Inspiration: Inspired by the attributes from the Dragon sign from the Korean zodiac

Description: Fierce is an unscented lip balm with aqua green to gold shimmer. It does leave a slight, sheer white on the lips with a subtle sparkle. Leaves lips smooth and soft.

Inspiration: Inspired by the Dragon sign from the Korean zodiac.

Description: Star-Crossed Lovers is a burnt orange nail polish with a shifting pink-orange-gold shimmer, holographic flakes and gold flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Effect Topper By Dany Vianna | Star Charting (Thermal)

Inspiration: Inspired by  Star Charts.

Description: Star Charting is a thermal topper that goes from clear to ultramarine blue with aurora and holographic flakies.  I used it over bare nail, pale nude, black and deep, bright pink to show it off.

The description says it goes to ultramarine blue, but my bottle sits at the periwinkle blue line and goes to clear. It is possible the bottle you receive will be a deeper blue.

Inspiration: Inspired by an image of the Gemini constellation

Description: The Twins: Castor is a deep inky navy blue scattered holo with a pink sheen, silver and gold galaxy holo, silver holo micro flakes, gold metallic micro flakes and orange to gold crystal chameleon flakes. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This shade dries down with a mild texture, but 1 coat of top coat should smooth it over.

Cuticula | Limitless QDTC & Base Coat Duo

Inspiration: Unspecified

Description: The duo this month includes Mic Drop base coat, which is a ridge filling and sticky base coat in 1 bottle. It’s 5 free and dries down to a pale, sheer milky base. Limitless Top Coat is also 5 Free, and it’s a quick dry top coat that gives your mani a nice shine, and if you float it… it plays nice with nail art too.

The scent this month is ‘To The Stars’ and it is a blend of pomegranate, strawberries, peppermint and vanilla. My nose is still slightly stuffed, but I do pick up peppermint and pomegranate the most. It’s a fruity mint scent that’s pleasing. I usually don’t connect mint and fruits together – but this blend is really nice.

Confection Nail Fortifier by Cuticula | To The Stars

Inspiration: Unspecified

Description: Confection Nail Fortifier is a non greasy creamy formula fortified to help keep nails strong and cuticles soft and moisturized. This product gives the perfect amount of hydration, nutrition, and amazing smelling scent. A little bit goes a long way with this product.

The scent this month is ‘To The Stars’ and it is a blend of pomegranate, strawberries, peppermint and vanilla. My nose is still slightly stuffed, but I do pick up peppermint and pomegranate the most. It’s a fruity mint scent that’s pleasing. I usually don’t connect mint and fruits together – but this blend is really nice. The Confection Nail Fortifier scent matches the duo shown above for optimum scent layering

Description: Did You Fall From A Shooting Star? is a blurple jelly base loaded with red to green to gold aurora shimmers and color shifting iridescent flakes, as well as holographic microflakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This leans a bit more purple in person, and the shimmer is stronger.

Inspiration: Drops of Jupiter by Train

Description: Drops of Jupiter cuticle oil is a custom blended oil fragranced with vanilla cake and fresh ripened cherries. This is an incredible blend and the cherry scent is fairly tart to me and the vanilla cake mellows it out and softens that tart bite. I want a gallon of this scent.

This cuticle oil is in a brush pen applicator with a twist up barrel.

Dollish Polish | CALL ME NOW!

Inspiration: Inspired by  Miss Cleo – Psychic extraordinaire

Description: CALL ME NOW! is a deep merlot red jelly base packed with pink to copper to gold to green ultrachrome chameleon flakes, chameleon iridescent flakes and holo micro flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This polish dries with a slight texture, so you might need 2 coats of top coat to smooth. It all depends on how the flakes disperse on application.

Inspiration: Inspired by a play on stars telling our destinies and stars being destined to go supernova.

Description: The Destiny of Stars is a warm beigey jelly base with rose gold to gold duochrome shifting flakes and a mix of holo flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Inspiration: Inspired by Canis Major Constellation

Description: Zoo-diac is an ultramarine jelly base filled with purple to pink shimmer, holographic micro-flakes and red chrome pigment. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

I was sent the old style bottle, but all purchases will be in the new one, which is similar in style I believe, but more rounded edges.

Smooth & Shine Duo by Esmaltes da Kelly

Inspiration: Inspired by Neptune

Description: This duo consists of two finishers for strong glitter. Smooth Base should be applied over the nail polish to prevent glitter from absorbing the top coat. it forms a layer on the glitter making it smooth. after applying Top Coat Shine to get the glazed shine.

So essentially – it’s 2 top coats. One fills in the crevices of the glitters and the other is a more typical topper to give it a nice, shiny appearance. It works incredibly well and I will be grabbing backups for future glittery manicures. I also found that the “filler” top coat works nicely on it’s own as a lightly tinted base to make your nails look healthier.

Description: Neptune is a deep blue jelly base loaded with holographic silver, blue, pink, black, turquoise and glitter holographic confetti. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos. I used this with the duo above, and it really did smooth out this glittery creation.

Fair Maiden Polish | Hot Like Fire

Inspiration: Zodiac Fire Signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius (side note, Sarah and I are both fire signs so this take on the theme felt natural)

Description: Hot Like Fire is a magenta rose jelly base with intense color shifting shimmer that shows flashes of gold, green and violet blue. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Ginger Fizz Boutique | Pink Galaxy Wax

Inspiration: ” Like most children growing up, I remember laying out on a blanket at night star gazing. I still remember my father showing me where all the constellations were located in the sky. I would wonder in amazement about all of the other planets in our world and if there was life in the great beyond. 

NASA has answered many of our questions about our solar system and gives us a glimpse into other galaxies. The Pink Galaxy is known as M81 short for Messier 81. It is a perfectly picturesque spiral galaxy. That means it’s elegant arms curl all the way down to its center. M81 is located 12 million light-years away in the ursa major constellations and is one of the brightest galaxies that can be seen from Earth through telescopes “

Description: Pink Galaxy has a base of light pink with light turquoise and blue swirls topped with colorful planets and stars. This wax brittle is scented with fruity cereal and hints of marshmallow. The base wax has top notes are of lemon rinds, lime, and grapefruit; middle notes of lemongrass, lily, and verbena; and base notes of vanilla sugar. 

My nose really picks up on the lemon and lime, and a touch of fruity pebbles. It’s a fun scent for day time and it’s not too girly. Both Nick and Jacob loved the scent in the kitchen (our central room) when I melted it.

Inspiration: Inspired by the traits my own astrological sign; Libra.

Fairness. Balance. Calm. Equality. Love.

I am a Libra, though & through, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Maybe. What do you think? What are my other options?

Description: Equilibrium is a soft and intentionally sheer cornflower blue base, with a lovely mix of shifting shimmer and iridescent flakes that flirt with blue, lavender, pink, and green and a sprinkle of holographic micro flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Glitter Globe Pen by Girly Bits

Inspiration: Inspired by a photo of a rainbow galaxy.

Description: Luxury floating glitter globe pen. Perfect for planner enthusiasts, or any time you want to feel a little extra.

This pen has a decent weight to it and doesn’t feel cheaply made. The ink cartridges are refillable and available at most office supply stores, and can also be found on Girly Bits website. The ink flows nicely and has a good, smooth flow – so it won’t skip.

Glisten & Glow | Top Coat

Description:  Glisten & Glow top coat is perfect for nail art and stamping and is a long lasting glassy quick dry top coat.  I’ve been using the top coat for 7 years now and it’s never failed me. It dries fast, has a very glossy, high shine and floats well over nail art.

For the stamping shown below – I stamped with black polish over this month’s Polish Pickup shade from Glisten & Glow.

Grace-full Nail Polish | Balance and Harmony (Thermal)

Inspiration: Inspired by a Libra makeup photo

Description: Balance and Harmony is a medium periwinkle blue (cold) to light blue (hot) thermal with gold flakes and a strong pink flash.  I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Great Lakes Lacquer | The Scorpion, The Serpent, The Phoenix

Inspiration: Inspired by the astrological sign of Scorpio

Description: The Scorpion, The Serpent, The Phoenix is a purple based multichrome with shifts of blush, silver, lime, aqua, and fuchsia. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Trust me when I say that you need to see this baby in action, in person to grasp how incredible it is.

Handmade Gift Canada | Glass Files

Description: Handmade Gift Canada will have sets of 2 glass files for the shop. The colors received will be assorted, I happened to get red and hot pink.

I tried these out when they were sent for my honest thoughts on them, and personally, they aren’t for me. These are larger grit than files I typically use and were rougher on my natural nails, which led me to believe they are more suited for those with enhancements, such as acrylic, gel, etc. I was able to file my natural nails with these, but I had to go over the filed area with a buffing block to smooth the edges out.

I do not have acrylics or gels, so this is completely my assumption since most fine grit files don’t seem to be enough for those types of nails.

The grit does appear to be etched in though, I filed against a board I have and the grit didn’t seem to come off or wear down. Usually with glass/crystal files they are laser etched or sand blasted – Lasered lasts practically forever, or until you drop it and shatter it. Sand Blasted means the grit will wear off. I didn’t notice any “wear” on it after my test.

Heather’s Hues | Scorpius

Inspiration: a gorgeous image of a mandala with a Scorpio symbol (my zodiac sign!) Just like a Scorpio, this polish is extremely intense, and filled with passion, beauty, and strength.

Description: If any polish wins for hardest to capture – this is it. I don’t think I’ve ever taken as many photo as I did with this one, because the blue shift in it is visible to the eye, but the camera is like “nah.”

Scorpius is a blurple jelly packed with an iridescent shimmer that shifts between pink, gold, green, with sparks of teal and blue. The pink shimmer is more vibrant in person and makes it a warmer purple than my photos show. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

WiTS Lotion by Heather’s Hues

In the 80’s as a child, space was on the forefront of a lot of minds. We had space shuttles heading into orbit, movies like Star Wars, Space Camp, and two space centers allowed us to get up close in personal NASA. My personal favorite from the space center visit? A bar of Astronaut Ice Cream. That freeze dried bar sparked my imagination and made me feel I too could walk on the moon.

Description: Astronaut Ice Cream sugar scrub features 3 layers; each with their own scent. The classic strawberry, vanilla and chocolate flavors ice cream are represented in the pink, cream, and brown colored layers. Egyptian sandalwood, musk, and myrrh. A great warrior, indeed.

This reminds me of Berkeley shops. The sandalwood is the strongest note for me and it’s clear as day, even with my cold.

Inspiration: Inspired by 10,000 stars for every grain of sand on earth 

Description: Scoopable wax beads with star wax melts that can glow in the dark if exposed to enough light! Scented in Black Raspberry Vanilla with mica coloring and star glitter and confetti.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wax like this, but I’m loving it. It’s exactly like little grains of sand and it’s easy to scoop. This smells DELICIOUS. I have my warmer that’s purely for photos so it’s always ready to go – and when I scooped some in, I walked away for about 20 minutes to set something up for my son – came back and the whole room was raspberry vanilla scented… without melting. I did melt it in my kitchen as well, and the throw was really good and spread throughout the living room, kitchen and hallways.

Description: This is made of natural, nutrient-rich plant oils with 24K gold flakes and essential oils. This non-greasy formula helps to revitalize, strengthen and brighten cuticles and nails. It absorbs quickly and leaves a mild scent on your hands. Apply few times a day on cuticles and nails for best results.

The scent is incredibly faint, to the point that I couldn’t detect much (again though, I have a cold) and works really well. It’s in a bottle, so it’s opened like any polish and brushed on.

Moisturizing Cuticle Cream by Penélope Luz

Inspiration: I was inspired by the intensity of the Leo sign. I chose this cream for this month because it has intense hydration, like the sign Leo.

Description: Moisturizing Cuticle Cream is a high hydration cream with tea tree and clove essential oils. It has true medicinal effects to prevent fungus and strengthen nails. It comes in a squeeze tube with a narrow dispensing applicator which I’m kind of loving. It makes it so you squeeze just enough out and product doesn’t seem wasted since it makes it harder to use too much.

I’ve only had this less than a week, so I’ve only been able to use it a few times, and it works pretty well from what I can tell. There isn’t a strong scent and it isn’t greasy.

Celestial Page Marker & Charm Set by Starlight and Sparkles

Inspiration: Inspired by the celestial objects we orient ourselves with – the sun, moon, stars, and zodiac constellations.

Description: In order to get these out in time, I did not receive a full set of the page markers – so this is simply a sampling of what you’ll receive.

There are six page markers in this set – a golden sun, a silver moon, a golden star, a silver star, a golden disc with the symbols of the zodiac, and a silver swirl of stars. The charms are a crystal AB star and a silver disc with the zodiac symbols around an overlapping sun and moon. The charms hang from stainless steel lobster claw clasps, and the page markers use rectangular paperclips (also called owl clips). The clips can be used to mark pages in planners, books, notebooks, or journals (or even just for clipping papers together in your office!), and the charms can be attached to planners by elastic bands or zipper pulls.

Emulsified Sugar Scrub by STELLA CHROMA | Love Horoscope

Inspiration: Inspired by being obsessed with love horoscopes as a young teen. And with VS Endless Love body spray.

Description: This was my signature scent from like 17 until I was 22. A little over a year ago, I asked Pam of Stella Chroma if she could get this scent for me to purchase products in it since it’s been discontinued from VS for many years – and she did it. I have this sugar scrub, perfume oil and several other items and I was in heaven sniffing it all.

The scent is fruity and floral with top notes of apple, pineapple, and jasmine accented by mid notes of rose and heliotrope. Ends with vanilla and a slight musk.

The Soapy Chef | Aries Breakfast Cuticle Scrub

Inspiration: Inspired by a Tasty.com video on the perfect breakfast for your zodiac sign. The perfect breakfast for Aries is a fruit and cream cheese breakfast pastry!

Description: This gentle cuticle scrub/balm hybrid is made with a blend of oils and butters, as well as granulated sugar that buffs away dead skin around the cuticles and nail beds. It smells like fresh blueberries, cream, cheesecake, and flaky buttery pie crust.

The strongest notes I can detect is blueberry and cream cheese. The blueberry is definitely noticeable though – and it smells amazing, even with a broken sniffer. The formula is really nice – with the balm like base, the sugar particles are easy to control and don’t crumble off all over the place. The particles are finer and gives an incredible scrub effect while the balm allows it to stay to the area you are trying to exfoliate.

Both are in the scent ‘My Sign is Unicorn’ – which is a mix of juicy bubblegum, cotton candy, apples, pears, and plums, as well as vanilla frosting and sugarcane. Sweet and delicious.

Double Bond:
This revolutionary 2 in 1 base coat is formulated with proteins to fill imperfections and ridges on the surface of the nail leaving you with a smooth even base ready for polish. Vibrant Vinyls added sticky bond base coat to the ridge filler to grab onto your polish and keep it there.

Fast & Hard can be used over wet polish and provides a glossy shine. Plus it plays well with stamping if you “float” the top coat over the design.

Polish Pickup January 2020 | Written In The Stars

There we have it – 103 items for January (so far!) I’m still waiting on Girly Bits Cosmetics PPU and IPU (which cleared customs yesterday) as well as Cadillacquer. When those arrive I will add them in.

This is a gorgeous assortment of polishes and while it leans blue/purple heavy – it fits the theme. I do apologize for the cold so I can’t give completely thorough reviews of the scented items, but I did the best I could with my circumstances.
