This month was definitely a stressful one, but no one is really at fault. At the time of posting this I still have at least 20 pr packages still stuck in the USPS black hole. I tried holding this post off a bit to hopefully have some arrive and I can’t hold off any longer. So when the remaining arrive, I’ll be adding those in.

In the meantime.. here’s a look at the Polish Pickup January 2021 Birthstones, Gems & Minerals!

This is the second time this theme has come around. The very first time I was a Polish Pickup Blogger of the Month the theme was Crystals & Gemstones, and that was back in January of 2018 – so 3 years later we are revisiting it. The initial one I was BOTM for happened before I was a mod or anything, and that kicked off the whole “unofficial blogger of the month” and introduced me to a ton of brands I hadn’t had the chance to work with yet. Since then I’ve pretty much done 40+ each month, more as the shop grew.

For the fine details – for all photos shown – I used Vapid Lacquer Commitment Issues Peel Off Base, Atomic Polish Quick Dry Top Coat (except for when I used Glisten & Glow Top Coat & Vibrant Vinyls), and Atomic Polish Matte Top Coat. I purchased the Vapid Lacquer Commitment Issues, but the Atomic Polish Top Coats were both gifted to me in a swatcher pack with no expectations of a review or feature.

I do use artificial lighting for my photos. I get the most done at night, so I swatch a lot at night. My current setup uses GlamCor Pro LIghts and I use the Ultra X Model and this Daylight Company Duo Daylight Lamp (affiliate link).

Lets get this show on the road. Heads up – my middle finger nail ripped a little below the nail line, and due to needing remover – a simple patch wouldn’t do. I did a dip & clear gel reinforcement and I was kind of learning as I went. So some photos my nail looks… weird. That’s why. The redness below the cuticle? Mix of cold weather and the buffing block rubbing the skin and irritating it.

1850 Artisan Polish | Periwinkle Sapphire (Thermal)

Inspiration:Inspired by Naturally tri-color sapphire

Description: Periwinkle Sapphire is a shimmery thermal that transitions from a warm purple (cold) to denim blue leaning periwinkle when warm. It’s filled with pink to gold multichrome shimmer, fuchsia to purple microflakes, gold micro flakes and scattered holographic shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

There is a very slight texture when it dries, but you should still only need 1 coat of top coat to smooth over.

Alchemy Lacquers | Kyber Crystal

Inspiration: Inspired by SW, precious Kyber Crystal were force-attuned stones that were used by Jedi and Sith in the construction of their light sabers.

Description: Kyber Crystal is a pale baby blue crelly base with pink to orange shimmer and pink to orange shifting flakes. This is a beautiful pale shade, but when the sun hits just right – the shimmer and flakes will dazzle you. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Inspiration: Inspired by Marvel Infinity Stones

Description: Fist Full of Stones is a black jelly base with scattered holo, rainbow of shimmer and holographic flakes in a variety of colors. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

All Mixed Up Lacquers | Infinity Fizzy Bombs

Inspiration: Inspired by Marvel Infinity Stones

Description: Set of 2 snowflake shaped fizzies with hidden colors inside. Scented in an outdoorsy peppermint and pine scent.

This is such a refreshing scent! I wasn’t sure about the pine when I read it, but when it fizzed up and scented – the peppermint mixed with it is perfection.

So these are basically smaller bath bombs made for feet and/or hands. You can take a small piece or one, drop it in and let it fizz up and the oils mix in the water, then soak. I made the mistake of too much water in a bowl… and a full fizzy. Boy does that get a LOT of fizz to it. But at least it smelled amazing!

Inspiration: Inspired by a photo of the elbaite tourmaline

Description: Elbaite Tourmaline is a dark green jelly base loaded with blue to purple to burgundy to gold shifting shimmer. The shimmer is larger particle so it’s almost micro fleck like. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Description: Blue Diamond is a rich, deep blue crelly base with green micro flecks and delicate gold shimmer mixed in. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Top Coat by Apipila | Smudge Free Top Coat for Nail Art

Inspiration:

Description: Smudge Free Top Coat is a water based top coat that can work as a barrier over stamping, burnishing powders and other nail art. I did a demo video in the Polish Pickup group to show how well it works.

This initially released in the September Polish Pickup shop and I received it for PR and I loved it so much I bought a back up bottle. It’s coming out again, and I will be buying a backup again. It has yet to smear a single thing for me.

Atomic Polish | Silicate

Inspiration: Inspired by a beautiful orange/pink bicolored Tourmaline crystal. Tourmaline is the common name for the group of boron silicate minerals.

Description: Silicate is a pink jelly base with orange to pink shifting shimmer, which gives it an almost coral look in some lighting. This is a very shifty shade and some angles you see coral, some orange, some red and some a fuchsia like shade. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Baby Girl Lacquer | Amethyst Angels (February Babies)

Inspiration: In loving memory of my late Mom and Big Sister’s birthstone, the amethyst.

Description: Amethyst Angels (February Babies) is a cool purple crelly base with blue, purple and silver flecks and micro flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Baroness X | Fire Agate

Inspiration: The inspo is Fire Agate, a variety of chalcedony. It’s found only in central and northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. It is the stone of the Hero’s Journey, giving us the courage to follow our spiritual path, even into the Dark places we fear, and to emerge triumphantly again into the Light.

Description: Fire Agate is a black to magenta to red to bronze multichrome with green and blue shifting iridescent micro flakes. I used 2 coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Acetone Antidote by Baroness X | Pome-garnet

Inspiration: Inspired by “…before underworld ruler Hades, parted ways with Persephone, the Greek goddess of vegetation, he gifted her a pomegranate. Hades knew that once the sweetness of the ripened seeds was experienced she would return. And she did yearly, for six months, forever. Persephone’s annual return to Hades causes the winter to arrive. The pomegranate and garnet gems are associated with eternity in Greek Myths. Embellishing symbolism to garnets as a gift of love’s attraction, of quick return or as a gift of estranged love. This myth creates the belief that garnet is a stone for traveling lovers and a crystal that can heal lover’s broken bonds.”

Description: This month’s Acetone Antidote scent is Pome-garnet, it has main notes of pomegranate, red currants & clementine, with hints of cassis & bright citrus fruits. This is a custom blended, limited house scent.

To my nose – i pick up the pomegranate, but the citrus/clementine scent really jumps out. Its almost like you can smell the pulp. But there’s also a floral note that leans musky a bit.

Acetone Antidote is an additive for your acetone to protect your skin from the harshness of acetone. It contains glycerin and jojoba oil to help protect and moisturize your nails, skin, and cuticles during polish removal. Plus, no more ashy, dry skin!

Inspiration: Inspired by Doom Eternal Sentinel Crystal

Description: Until It Is Done is a medium blue base loaded with turquoise to blue to violet to fuchsia shifting shimmer. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Black Dahlia Lacquer | Rainbow Baby

Inspiration: Aubrey was inspired by her rainbow baby’s amethyst birth stone. He was born February 21, 2020.

Description: Rainbow Baby is a medium dusty purple jelly base with a strong linear holographic effect. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

On the first 2 coats, it looks pretty sheer – and it builds up nicely. However, if you have a really strong VNL, you might need a base foundation for more opacity.

Also- the holo effect is super vibrant in person.

Description: Preserver of History is a mustard yellow meets pea green crelly base with metallic gold flakes and brown metallic glitters. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Cadillacquer | Corundum (Tri-Thermal)

Inspiration: Inspired by a fluorescent Corundum mineral. Rubies and sapphires! Both are varieties of corundum, an aluminum oxide. Rubies are an extremely fluorescent red under long wave and can be found as large masses in both fuchsite and zoisite.

Description: Corundrum is a deep navy blue (cold) to blue (warm) to light blue (hot) tri thermal crelly base with matte red glitters ranging from micro to medium sizes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

The glitters give this a very slight texture depending on how the glitters lay. You should still only need 1 coat of top coat to smooth though

Inspiration: Inspired by Dioptase

Description: Dia Optasia is a deep teal leaning emerald green jelly base loaded with scattered holo, gold holographic micro glitters, orange to gold crystal chameleon flakes, gold metallic micro flakes and silver holo micro flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This is more vibrant in person and super sparkly!

Lip Balm by Color Spectrum Polish | Bedazzle Me

Inspiration: Inspired by Fashion Jewels

Description: Bedazzle Me is a sheer, slightly pink tinted lip balm scented with watermelon, mango and peach with a very subtle light purple shimmer. When I wore this, I didn’t really see any tint or shimmer on the lips but I have fairly pigmented lips so it covers those at times. I still enjoy the lip balm and it smells like a summer fruit salad!

Color Spectrum Polish | S – Sulfur

Inspiration: Inspired by the element Sulfur

Description: S-Sulfur is a bright yellow jelly base with gold to green shimmers and yellow holographic micro glitters. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

The base is borderline neon, but the shimmer brings it out of the neon look at the end for me. I actually really enjoy it and it’s a wearable yellow for my cool skin.

This is SUPER sparkly and the holo is vibrant in this one in person.

Crystal Knockout | Pieces of Prism

Inspiration: Inspired by Gypsum

Description: Pieces of Prism is an ivory base with orange to green iridescent shimmer, gold and silver holographic micro glitter, and color-shifting iridescent flakies in copper, orange, gold, and green. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

I actually really love the look of this one on. It’s elegant and not super flashy while still having that “Ohhhh” factor.

Description: Mystic Topaz is a medium grey crème polish filled with purple/teal/gold multichrome and iridescent shimmers. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This is so shifty and beautifully done. I love the grey base and the shimmer just pops against it.

Inspiration: Inspired by rainbow titanium quartz crystal.  

Description: Crystallize is a clear based topper with 10 different iridescent shifting flake types, as well as medium and large silver platinum flakes mixed in. I used 1 coat over Fancy Gloss Forest (purchased by me)

Cuticula | They’re Minerals, Marie!

Inspiration: Inspired by Breaking Bad’s Hank Schrader and his love of rocks…I mean minerals.

Description: They’re Minerals, Marie! is a green leaning mint crelly base with a rainbow of iridescent flakes, lime green – blue chrome shifting flakes, and shiny silver platinum flakes. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

2 coats would have worked, but man – those flakes create such a beautiful depth I had to do 1 more.

Inspiration: Inspired by Dam Nail Polish creator’s birthstone Amethyst

Description: Dam-ethyst is an orchid pink (hot) to blackened purple (cold) crelly based thermal polish loaded with pink and purple glitters. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

The glitters do give this a mild texture so depending on top coat, you might need 2 coats for a smooth finish.

Will have a mild texture, but you might get away with just 1 coat of top coat depending on thickness.

Inspiration: Inspired by the Pick you Pouch of gemstones and rocks retail display at vacation destinations during my childhood. I would run to the display and dig for all kinds of colorful and smooth gemstones and rocks to add to my pouch.

Glisten & Glow | Quick Dry Top Coat

Inspiration:

Description: Glisten & Glow is back with her quick dry glossy top coat! This gives polishes a wet “gel like” appearance and works well floated over stamping and nail art. It also glows under black light!

I’ve been using this top coat for… I want to say 7 or 8 years now and it’s always worked incredibly well.

Great Lakes Lacquer | Labradorescence

Inspiration: Inspired by Labradorite

Description: Labradorescence is as heer cobalt blue jelly absolutely glowing with iridescent flakes that shift from copper to gold to green to blue and a bit of shimmer to match. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This has a light sulfur like scent and it might be the pigment (cobalt sometimes has it) or the flakes (same thing, some flakes have it) or both. However, it’s not super strong and once it dries on the nail the scent dissipates fairly quickly.

Inspiration: Heather’s Hues was inspired by one of her favorite pieces of jewelry which features a stunning aurora opal.

Description: Opal Minded is a pale turquoise crelly base with red to pink to orange to gold to green shimmer, as well as pink to violet to green iridescent flakes and holo sparkle. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

WiTS by Heather’s Hues | Star Ruby

Inspiration: This creamy lotion is sooooo good I had to name it “What is This Sorcery?” or “WiTS” Lotion. It’s packed full of skin-loving, nourishing natural ingredients that absorb quickly and leave your skin ultra moisturized.

Description: WiTs body lotion is a fast absorbing body lotion that doesn’t leave my hands greasy. The texture is light and creamy and a little goes a long way.

The January scent is “Star Ruby” and it’s a delicious blend of black raspberry and vanilla. (Top notes of black currant, grapefruit and mandarin mix with middle notes of apple and violet laid on a creamy vanilla base)

This one actually is a bright scent. The fruity notes are pleasantly tart and smell delicious. Almost like a candy raspberry? Sweet and tart! But not overly sugary like.

Although this is a crelly base, it has really nice coverage and toes the line of being a creme. So as far as crelly goes, it leans farther into the Cre side

Inspiration: I decided to do my moms birthstone. March has two birthstones so I chose to go with the traditional version, the bloodstone.

I adore this one with matte top coat!

Hand & Body Sugar Scrub by KBShimmer | Feeling A Little Salty

Inspiration: Inspired by Salt

Description: KBShimmer’s sugar scrubs are good for all over the body or as a hand scrub, the sugar particles are medium grit so they do a good job getting dry spots on your body situated.

While the name is Feeling A Little Salty and it’s inspired by Salt… this is not a salt scrub. It’s still sugar.

Feeling A Little Salty sugar scrub starts with top notes of salty sea spray. Crisp ozone and fresh rain middle notes give way to subtle floral scents of lily of the valley and jasmine. A hint of leafy greens, pine, and musk round out this complex scent for a fresh, sea-like experience in your own home. 

This is incredibly beachy and reminds me of beach scent meets fresh rain scent.

Lollipop Posse Lacquer | The Divergence

Inspiration: Inspired by A Ruby Zoisite, a gemstone known for its creative energy and the divergence of vivid green, red, and purple hues found within the gem.

Description: Divergence is a purple-leaning rose pink crelly base packed with vivid green shifting Aurora shimmer and scattered holographic pigment. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Wax by LynBDesigns | Opal

Inspiration: Inspired by the gemstone opal

Description: Opal is LynBDesigns wax this month and its a medium grey color with crystal like shreds on top. The scent notes are:

Top: Freesia, Ozone
Middle: Fig, Geranium, Green Leaves, Jasmine, Cherry Blossom
Base: Bamboo, Powder, Wood, Moss, Saffron, Patchouli

To my nose it is more in the floral category but it has a strong earthy scent to it so it’s not an overpowering floral. They balance each other well to make a more pleasant home fragrance instead of a “someone got ahold of perfume and went to town” type scent. My nose in particular picks up the freesia, green leaves and jasmine.

LynBDesigns | Sodalite-Ful (Thermal)

Inspiration: Inspired by Yooperlites which fluoresce orange under black light.

Description: **This is a thermal and I didn’t realize it when I swatched so I do need to redo these photos.***

Sodalite-ful is a denim blue to deep blurple thermal holo base with red to orange to yellow UCC flakies, and red to purple to orange shifting flakies that also fluoresces orange under black light. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

Michelle Mildred Art | Tourmaline Sticker Duo

Inspiration: Inspired by watermelon tourmaline and rainbow tourmaline

Description: I love how adorable and sturdy these stickers are!

The January set consists of 2 stickers – one is the Watermelon Tourmaline which features watermelon slices, watermelon tourmaline gems and a polish bottle with watermelon pink, white and green sections. The other is for Rainbow Tourmaline and features a blurple, violet pink and yellow rainbow, rainbow tourmaline gems and a blurple to violet to yellow round polish bottle.

I think Rainbow Tourmaline is my favorite of the two, but both are beautifully created.

Inspiration: Inspired by the Gem State of Idaho

Description: Huckleberry deserts and the berries themselves are a huge draw in some parts of the Gem State (Idaho) and people will drive and hike for hours to get enough berries for a single pie or desert. Gem State Huckleberry is a tart berry scent with subtle undertones that will transport you straight into the peaceful woods.

Southern Idaho has many sources of the mineral-like Obsidian that have been quarried, but you may be lucky enough to come across this dark majestic stone out hiking on Idaho’s trails. Frozen Obsidian is a fresh and cool minty vanilla with just a hint of a musk undertone.

If you like rich, tart berry for one and mint leveled out by a musky vanilla for the other – you will love this duo.

Description: Peach Sapphire is a cold reactive thermal. It’s jelly based and goes from a peachy coral (cold) to carnation pink (warm) with purple to pink to green ultrachrome flakes, gold micro flakes, and micro gold holographic glitters. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

The main bottle color in this one is the warm state color. Instead of triggering the color change with heat, it needs cold temps.

Da Balmer by Red Eyed Lacquer | Rock On

Inspiration: Inspired by sea glass

Description: Da-Balmer is a cross between a balm and body butter. It’s creamy like a body butter but has a more emollient feel like a balm would. It’s an intensive treatment you can use anywhere (I love it on cuticles of course) but a little goes a long way. If you use too much – it will feel very oily (like a balm would) so start with a little and build up if you need more.

Scented in the smell of salt water, citrus and driftwood with a hint of musk and limoncello for sweetness.

This is more of a unisex scent and I get that salty ocean fragrance and a touch of sweetness. It’s intoxicating and I’ve been using this particular scent since it arrived. I’ll be buying a backup

Description: Lit Loot Mate is a milky grey crelly base with strong red shimmer, some bronze sparkle and ghost and duo chrome flakies that shift red, fuchsia, green, gold, violet and blue. I used 3 thin coats and a glossy top coat for these photos.

This comes out almost a greyish mauve tone and I really loved the look of it.

Jewelry by Starlight & Sparkles | Ammolite Pendant

Inspiration: Inspired by Ammolite! It’s an organic gemstone, sometimes found in ammonite fossils. Gem-quality ammolite comes more often in red or green than blue or purple, and has gorgeous chromatic shift. I was inspired to use UP and UP sibling pigment for my ammolite-inspired pieces this month because the colors and shifts of ammolites match up really well with these pigments!  

Description: The Ammolite pendant uses a black pendant tray and a glass cabochon, and green to blue old school UP sibling pigment, which shifts from a rich cool-toned green to turquoise to vibrant blue and even into indigo at more extreme angles, much like blue (or blue-green) ammolite! The outline of the same overlapping spiral/criss-cross pattern that is on the back of the pendants shows under the pigment in the pendant, like the cracked pattern of dragonskin ammolite.

The glass cab is 1″ in diameter and it’s on a black cord with an adjustable clasping.

This is super shifty and beautiful with the normal pattern of the setting.

Emulsified Sugar Scrub by STELLA CHROMA | Amber Glow

Inspiration: Inspired by Amber stones

Description: Stella Chroma’s Emulsified Sugar Scrub is an incredibly fine particle sugar that’s densely packed in. Dig a little out of the jar, massage into your hands then rinse and keep rubbing it in while rinsing. Your hands will feel smooth, soft and incredible.

Amber Glow is a sultry, sexy scent that has a subtle citrus sparkle followed by earthy moss and florals, finishing with an amber, vanilla-musk dry down.

Essentially it’s amber and jasmine with a tiny bit of vanilla and patchouli, as well as citrus.

This initially was featured in the first Gemstone theme in January of 2018, then came back in March of 2019 for Album Covers. Every time it comes back I buy an extra jar in the shop – that’s how good it is.

The Soapy Chef | Rose Quartz Resin Trinket Dish

Description: This resin trinket dish is designed to look like natural stone, and also has a cluster of real rose quartz stones on the top. May be used as a coaster or soap dish as well. Each dish will be different.

Side note – while it can be used for a coaster, due to the texture the stones give it, my clumsy self would spill many a drink – so … keep that in mind if you are like me. They are kept to one side, so you would just have to keep the drink at the other… but I don’t pay enough attention

Description: Unicorn Skincare Magic brings us a Deluxe Balm Stick in the scent Satsuma! Satsuma is an energizing and uplifting citrus scent; a blend of orange, mandarin, mango, peach, lime, jasmine, and orange flowers.

It comes in what looks like a giant lip balm tube with a twist up bottom. It can be used all over the body – cuticles, elbows, heels, etc. Anywhere that needs a little TLC.

Description: An aromatic blend of patchouli, bright citrus, warm sandalwood, and a touch of lavender.

To my nose, this wax smells like the Nag Champa we all know from incense but it also has a clean soap like undertone. Like if there was a soap Nag Champa (I’m sure there is) this is what I would think it smells like.

My step dad used to burn Nag Champa incense a lot, so I love the scent – plus I grew up near Berkeley so most shops there had a Nag Champa scent going on.

Description: Vibrant Vinyl is back – and this month the scent is a Rainbow Aura and it combines a bright blend of blue cotton candy, tart raspberry and fizzy pop candy.

It reminds me of a tarter version of those blue raspberry blow pops. Take a little of the sweetness out, add a little more tart – and that’s the scent!

Double Bond is a ridge filling base coat and sticky base coat in 1. Best of both worlds. I also sometimes like wearing it alone cause it gives a healthy, sheer, milky look to the nails.

Polish Pickup January 2021 | Birthstones Gems & Minerals

So I was almost done with this post when USPS dropped off a FULL BIN of packages and most seem to be for PPU this month. I’ll be swatching them all tomorrow and adding them into this post. More are still missing – but this is a start. I’d guestimate about 19 packages in the bin, at least 10 are PPU.

This month was a really nice selection – we do lean into blues and purples a lot, but I enjoyed the pops of color.

Polish Pickup will also have glass nail files that are made of tempered glass that are laser etched. They came straight from Mont Bleu, so if you love their files – that’s who made these.

They will be $5.00 and I think we have 500 or so in stock.
